Hello there!

A few days ago I bought a new pc and today I try to install Gentoo on it.

All works fine until I should emerge something. After downloading the nescessary files the characters on the screen changes to unreadable characters. I don't know how to describe this exactly. Anyway I can't read something anymore and the only solution I know is to reboot and start again until the next emerge this happens again.
The only thing I can slightly read is an error message like ...temp/environment...file/command not found.

I'm clueless.

In the make.conf isn't anything special. The CPU is a Phenom and so I have chosen for march K8 and for makeopts j5.

Anyone have an idea what's wrong?

Thx in advance
Z.

Is there anything in /var/log/emerge.log that may give a clue?
Code:

cat /var/log/emerge.log | less

No, there were nothing that could help. But I try to install from the LiveCD now. Maybe that works.

The reset command may be able to make your terminal readable after this happens. Try redirecting the emerge output to a file, so that you can view it in an editor afterward. Most editors are smart enough that they escape the characters that would otherwise corrupt your display. This will allow you to see what characters were printed, which may help us understand why they are printed.

After installing from the LiveCD, make sure to do a complete system update:

Code:

emerge --sync && emerge -uD world
