Not too long ago, I made my old computer my linux box when I replaced the guts in my "main" computer. I then reinstalled. I'm actually running Sabayon at the moment but had the same problem with Gentoo and as I understand it Sabayon is just Gentoo made pretty.

ANyway, the issue I'm having is the computer freezes on a grey screen when trying to load X (startX, X, xdm, gdm, kdm, happens w/ all of them). This happens with the drivers that come w/ the distro, and when I install the newest release from ATI's website.

I've tried running through aticonfig --initial, xorgconfig, etc. with no luck. fglrx is loaded. The computer completely locks up, I can't ping it or ssh into it. The last few lines in the xorg.0.log appear to be related to it being unable to load fglrx (which is already loaded). I've tried rmmod'ing it so X can load it, and it still fails. I have an old old old Rage Pro 128 that it boots to just fine.

The card I'm having problems with is a Radeon x1650pro. I've googled this problem and have seen references to the x1xxx cards having problems with the ati drivers and xorg 7.3... but haven't had any luck with potential solutions.

I'm just running the base install xorg.conf right now with the Rage card. I have installed the new ATI driver from their website and it still works. When I swap out the card w/ the x1650, dead.

I can boot w/o X and it's fine w/ the framebuffer.

System is:

ASUS A78X-X mobo
Radeon x1650Pro 512MB
Athlon XP 2700+
1.5 GB pc 3200
Soundblaster Audigy SE

Any ideas, or need more information? I'm stumped and can't seem to find any useful info. :/

Thanks

Solved. I just had to change the aperture size to 512 in the BIOS.
