Maybe only binary downloads counts for the record.

I've tried downloading from mozilla and letting portage download it. Rebuilding the digest. I either get record size doesn't match. Then if rebuild digest get:
Code:
>>> Emerging (1 of 1) www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.0 to /
 * mozilla-firefox-3.0_rc1-patches-0.1.tar.bz2 RMD160 SHA1 SHA256 size ;-) ...                                                                                                                           [ ok ]

It isn't creating the mozilla folder there. It has firefox and patch. If create the mozilla folder, then it just deletes it again and you have an endless cycle.
Ya, just so you know I deleted the contents of /usr/portage/distfiles each time.

Seems like with wxpython-2.8 where it was really late, Gentoo is going to be late with Firefox 3 also.

Anyone else ran into this?

*****Nevermind. The bin seems to be installing fine.

My Noia icons weren't compat. Maybe I got a new theme that just didn't have any forward or back buttons, but couldn't seem to find them. I need my back button. I wasn't that impressed, but didn't give it much time when found the back buttons weren't avail. So I put previous Firefox back and removed 3. That screwed up my forward and back buttons, but at least I was able to put them back on the bar and use them now. Don't think will be using Firefox-3 for awhile.

That was weird. Still have the theme couldn't find those buttons on. I have the older Firefox still installed. I changed to that them used on 3.0 and it has the forward/back buttons. But when I install 3.0 they disappear and aren't avail to put back.

Oh and before you put your foot in mouth and same I am nuts (actually I was trying to make sure I wasn't). I found this right off in google:
http://j-walkblog.com/index.php?/weblog/posts/firefox_3_missing_back_button/
http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?locale=en-US&forumId=1&comments_parentId=62949
http://eltepedia.blogspot.com/2008/06/firefox-3-missing-button-solved.html
But I couldn't find the icon to put them back. Maybe I'll try it again this weekend.

Yes but if you get in from portage will it count. Install from portage but download it also from the mozilla project so the download counts.

Honestly, I really don't care if my download 'counts' or not...

So why are you posting in this thread from what the OP is asking that was the point of this thread.

when I try to emerge firefox3 (amd64) emerge demands
cairo >1.6.0. this is hardmasked and likely to break
compiz and other things.

Is cairo 1.6.4 safe for general consumption?

also, if I may, does firefox3 on amd64 work with all
the 32bit workarounds (nspluginwrapper etc)?

Answering some questions:
-Installing Firefox from portage won't count as a download, the only downloads that count are the ones that are downloaded through the bouncer at http://www.mozilla.com. i.e. it doesn't count if you download it directly from a mirror.
-The 3.0 final is the same code as RC2(yes, 2), because RC3 didn't contain any new code on Linux and Windows, and RC3 code is the final one.
-albright: please sync your tree, cairo-1.6.4 is stable on amd64 and is not hardmasked. I'm not sure about nspluginwrapper and stuff, nobody reported anything.

And yeah, sorry about messing with the distfiles, it should be correct now everywhere, the correct distfile is 11mb. Thats for the source version.

OK, thanks for that; an old, long gone "font-overlay" was gumming up the works ...

Are there any audio/video plugins that work yet with FF3? Totem, gxine, and mplayerplug-in all fail when compiling against FF3.

shortly i've done an world update and during this FF3 compiled successful from source (binary and source are now available into the ~amd64 tree, and also
Code:

[I] dev-libs/nss
     Available versions:  3.11.7 3.11.9 (~)3.12 {utils}
     Installed versions:  3.12(18:31:41 18.06.2008)(-utils)
     Homepage:            http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/nss/
Description:         Mozilla's Network Security Services library that implements PKI support).

Afterwords portage told me to run revdep-rebuild and found some broken libraries and tried to fix it. As follow of this it want's to rebuild my openoffice 2.4.1 (compiled from source  and cause its dependency it wants to downgrade my fresh installed FF3 to 2.0.14 8O (i halted this downgrading progress)

Actually i'm recompiling my openoffice 2.4.1 with the USE="-firefox" Flag, to prevent downgrading my FF3 afterwords.
What does the firefox functionallity into openoffice, is it very needful to have?
What i mislike is that from openoffice 2.4.1 on, it crashes after closing each programm of it (e.g. writer, calc...) but out of this it works fine, but this does belong to an other thread...

Does anyone confirm this behaviour? I look forward to an portage sync tomorrow to get off this trouble.

Ha, in the meantime openoffice 2.4.1 has been recompiled successful, and a new emerge -Duvpt world shows the following:
Code:

localhost andy # emerge -Duvpt world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Total: 1 package (1 downgrade), Size of downloads: 0 kB

So Firefox 3 should be downgraded furthermore as follow of the vlc dependencies, but why? Which of its USE Flags could be resonsible for this?
Or should i take <=www-client/mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.14 to my package mask to solve this?

Your feedback is welcome.

xulrunner is becoming a problem.

ff3 needs xulrunner-1.9, but yelp is pulling 1.8 in also. No error message, although portage doesn't list xulrunner 1.8 and 1.9 as slotted.

-Randy Andy: Add xulrunner to your USE-flags. Vlc wants ff2 because you neither have the seamonkey or xulrunner USE-flag enabled.
-red-wolf76: Please post here the output emerge gives.

Also mplayerplug-in behaves the same. A bug has already been filed, so let's hope the best.

EDITH: This thread seems to relate to this, as I get the same problem when I put "gnome-extra/yelp -xulrunner" in /etc/portage/package.use...

For me, xulrunner 1.8 and 1.9 are slotted properly; was that changed since you guys had a problem? If so, then that problem is now gone.

First of all, I'd look at the ebuilds for xulrunner-1.8.1.14 and xulrunner-1.9 to see if there's actual slotting going on; that emerge request isn't entirely clear either way. Even if the slots are recognized properly, it might still want to emerge a crazy number of packages; I'd try first doing "emerge -1 =net-libs/xulrunner-1.8.1.14 =net-libs/xulrunner-1.9" and then seeing what emerge -uDNav world gives you.

How is "emerge --update --deep --newuse --pretend --verbose" unclear? I did just add "xulrunner" to my USE variable in make.conf to make stuff depend on that instead of firefox2.

Anyhow, this is the output of
emerge -1pvt =xulrunner-1.8.1.14 =xulrunner-1.9:
These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] net-libs/xulrunner-1.9  USE="dbus gnome ipv6 java -startup-notification" 33,244 kB
[ebuild  N    ] net-libs/xulrunner-1.8.1.14  USE="gnome ipv6 java -debug -xinerama -xprint" 34,626 kB
[nomerge      ] net-libs/xulrunner-1.9  USE="dbus gnome ipv6 java -startup-notification"
[ebuild  N    ]  media-libs/lcms-1.17  USE="jpeg python tiff zlib" 878 kB
[ebuild  N    ]   dev-lang/swig-1.3.35  USE="java perl python -R -chicken -clisp -doc -guile -lua -mono -mzscheme -ocaml -octave -php -pike -ruby -tcl -tk" 0 kB
[ebuild     U ]  dev-libs/nss-3.12 [3.11.9] USE="-utils" 5,043 kB
[ebuild     U ]   dev-libs/nspr-4.7.1 [4.7] USE="ipv6 -debug" 958 kB

Total: 6 packages (2 upgrades, 4 new), Size of downloads: 74,747 kB

As for hidden slotting inside the ebuilds, sorry, I don't know enough about ebuild structure yet to find that out in a jiffy.

The ebuilds are fairly easy to read; for xulrunner, they're located in /usr/portage/net-libs/xulrunner/. There'll be one called xulrunner-1.8.1.14.ebuild and a second called xulrunner-1.9.ebuild. The former should have a line in it saying SLOT="1.8", while the other should have a line saying SLOT="1.9". If they don't...maybe try syncing again? I don't know.

Sorry armin, still both versions get pulled in. In my case, yelp is the culprit. See the output from "dep -L xulrunner" above.

-red-wolf76: Thing is that both versions need to be pulled...yelp and other stuff doesn't compile against xul-1.9

Having multiple versions is something that I could actually live with, in principle. I'm just loath to go ahead and run the emerge with massive packages like openoffice on the line and not have a clear idea of why portage appears to think it's possible for xulrunner to be installed in two versioned instances without being slotted properly. This looks like inviting disaster for breakfast and I'd rather not do that.

Another possibility is that my portage is borked and doesn't do slotting anymore.

I just synced yet again. Still no slotting. Gentoo mirrors must surely hate me already.

EDITH: Bug #204632 claims that yelp 2.20.1-rc1 compiles fine against xulrunner-1.9. I moved the yelp-2.20.1-rc1 ebuild to my overlay and tweaked the xulrunner dep line to read "xulrunner? ( >=net-libs/xulrunner-1.8 )".

This fixes yelp pulling in the old version. Will try compiling yelp next.

Slotting only occurs if you have an older or a newer slot installed. If you don't have it installed, then obviously it says both are new packages.
