I have four partitions, my root partition being hda4. I have about 20G of unpartitioned space located in the sectors after hda4 (originally intended to hold another distro, but who needs that, eh?) and I wonder if I can somehow add the unpartitioned space to hda4?

mmh partitions should not be mounted during this operation.You cant do this on yr gentoo machine if you are running just 1 hdd, you will need to boot the rescue cd

Edit:
Probably the cd will leave you with console, type startx then open console en type gparted. :wink:

Yeah, that seems logical. I'll try that. I have no plastic at the moment, so it'll have to wait.

I'd still like to find out how to unlock my hard drives though, I have a windows partition and a flash drive, but I can't transfer files between any of my partitons or hard drives as I don't have access, even as root.

what do u mean by unlocking?

P:S
If I have to guess I would say that those partition are probably having ntfs file system, where by you dont have write support on your machine.To check if you have write access you can always
Code:
ls -l /<mount point>

Let me know if im right i dont think i fully understood what you mean by unlockin/lockin :wink:

I use KDE and there's a picture of a padlock on the folder where I monted my winXP partition which, correctly, is NTFS, but I can't even browse or access files at all through the gui. (I can browse in the terminal though.) and I have a flash drive which does not have the padlock, but when I try to copy files to it I get an "Access Denied"-error, which renders it sort of useless, heh.

I tried to change ownership of the mount point to my user, but it wouldn't let me, and I tried changning permissions but that didn't do any good.

This is a total noob problem, heh.

Thats probably true if the partition is mounted as root using /etc/fstab, here is my fstab entry for my winxp/ntfs partition
Code:
/dev/sda1                                       /media/windowxp         ntfs                    defaults,umask=0                        1 2

That is probably no write support, you need to setup ntfs-3g to be able to write to ntfs fs instruction to setup that are here

this is my fstab entry for drive for "drive D" in winxp that i share files btwn gentoo && window.
Code:
/dev/sda7                                       /media/documents        ntfs-3g                 defaults,umask=0,commit=43200           1 2

P:S
Notice the umask means allowing all users to access the partition

hello Tuxido...good news for u as today i work up in the morning en just decided to re-adjust partition-table with the rescue cd.I performed the following:
old situation: Primary 45G --sda1 && logic sda2{sda5,sda6,sda7,sda8 i.e [boot,swap,root,ntfs]}102G
after:Primary 45G shrinked to 20G &&
sda2-->grow to cover 25G
sda5,sda6,-->moved to the left
root expanded en use the extra 25G which were wasted by winxp due to over expectation during installation half a yr ago....now im far better using my hdd ...thanks to gparted that thing is rock solid :P

P:S
anyway i didnt backup my data during the process, but good practice would be to backup your system b4 this operation.Another advice would be dont hurry tht process takes atleast 2hrs..so dont rush wait until its finished :wink:

Thanks, I have downloaded a rescue cd, and will try it when I can find the time. Sorry about the late response, I was stuck in a computerless environment (gah!) for a week.

RescueCD with GParted worked, and I was almost amazed at how easy it was.
