PostPosted: Mon Jun 09, 2008 8:18 pm    Post subject: Another SSH and X11 Forwarding problem [SOLVED] Reply with quote

I have been reading the forums, searching for a solution for many days now. I have tried every thing.

I am attempting to SSH with x forwarding from a windows box using cygwin/X, or Xming. (at work) to my Gentoo box i686 (2.6.24-r8). On the ssh server, the /etc/ssh/sshd_config has X11 Forwarding enabled. The WinXp box in cyg. has /etc/ssh/ssh_config with X11 allowed as well. I tried some stuff mentioned in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-249655-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-25.html , as well as many other proposed solutions. I have started over from scratch, with fresh config files. I am using PAM 9.9.09 or something like that, I know it has all 9's in the version number. I am using the most up to date stable release of openssh. This used to work on a Gentoo 2007.0 install, I moved to Gentoo 2008, and now it seems broken (probably myself who is broken : ) ) port 22 is forwarded through my router. I have a dns name of sik.sytes.net ... so the command I use to start the connection on cygwin/XP is ssh cole or root@sik.sytes.net -X (tried -Y to no avail. ) -C. I login, and when I echo $DISPLAY its gives one blank line, with nothing in it. if I export DISPLAY=localhost:10.0, I can start xterm, but no new window ever opens (yes, X11 display offset in sshd_config is set to 10) forgive the sloppy typing, at work and busy :) thanks in advance....

PS sorry if this is an idiot post

I just flew over your post. Anyhow I suggest NX instead of your approach - it is as secure as the other solution (works with ssh), it is more performant and does not give you such a headache when setting up (talking for myself). Check out the wiki for more information about NX.

Thank you so much for your advice guys! I'm glad you got the gist of my "incident". However, I got frustrated, and started over, this time, utilizing the EMT64 capabilities of my Core2 :) I will look into NX and rdesktop. I have tried NX, but it was out of desperation because other things weren't working. I will try again, while taking my sweet time. Currently I am installing over ssh. I will post my results once I try and set it up. Thanks again

Well, I never got NX to work, but I was trying in EMT64 env. After I gave up on that, due to countless failures; I tried ssh with X11 and it now works, better than before!
