I know there was a seti specific tread a while back, but I was curious what people use, or if they don't participate in any, why?

so do you work on any? why? why not?

Personaly, I participate in distributed.net (www.distributed.net)

wish we could have it in portage, but they don't like giving the whole source code.

I work on that one mostly because of personal interest in the encryption
testing project.

Distributed.net is in portage. The ebuild just downloads from the distributed.net servers.

I used to do F@H, but it had a nasty habit of halting my system with an icky stack dump, so I scrapped that. :(

I run FAH at night while I sleep or whenever I'm away from the computer. I wouldn't even bother except that it's a worthy cause. I don't really consider seti or distributed.net a worthy cause. At least, not as worthy as FAH.

I run F@H when I'm not working at my machine. It seems like a more beneficial cause than the other choices.

I used to be a huge SETI@Home fan, but I soon realized that they have more than enough CPU power to satisfy their needs. Now I'm running Folding@home. It seems more worthwhile, and the application really takes full advantage of your CPU power (e.g. Gromacs core).

No mention of zetagrid yet. not even in your poll! There a quite a few gentooers participating. When I last checked the gentoo team (Micheal Imhof) was at the number 2 position for work units processed in the team stats. There seem to be less people running it lately though and our processing lead is slipping.

Seti@home

I'm thinking about this thing about Mersenne primes (spelling correct?).

I currently still use Windows...

I've been running Zetagrid for over 5 months now. "We are Michael Imhof" :D

I was running zetagrid but my fan had a heart attack because of it (laptop) and now the keys that are directly above the processor are not working properly because of the heat. This is the second time this has happened in 6 months. Looks like it is time to buy yet another fan and keyboard.

I used to run zetagrid a lot but I gave up on it recently since I've been doing a lot of C++ development on my computer and G++ is slow enough without Zetagrid eating some CPU cycles too.

That's terrible. I can relate to the heat problem although I'm not running Zetagrid on a laptop. We're having pretty hot weather this summer and lately I've been stopping Zetagrid during the day and only letting it run at night.

This is the first distributed project I've run so I don't know if the others are this CPU intensive. I do like trying to help out Gentoo and this seemed a neat way to do it. The Zetagrid project has an end in sight so we won't be running this forever!

Just out of curiosity, what are the specs of the laptop?

I vote seti@home because it is the first one i ran.
Actually, i am running both seti and folding under the GLUE team :D

I have heard about zetagrid and the second place of gentoo but it doesn't run on my computer :(
(and three of distributed programs + dist-cc would be a little hard :P )

Folding@home for the GLUE team. Mostly because I have a family history of some of the diseases it has a chance to cure, so there is a little personal interest. My Grandfather is actually suffering from one right now. Need to help all I can there.

I have run different projects in the past, currently I'm running Seventeen or Bust on my main box and F@H on my secondary box, both for Ars Technica.
