hi, everytime I run alsamixer I get this error: Code: | LinuxBox chris200x9 # alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
LinuxBox chris200x9 #
| I've looked everywhere for help I already tried looking here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml I tried the notice that says Important: If you have issues starting up alsamixer and get errors such as alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory, this is usually an issue with udev setting up the devices. Run killall udevd; udevstart to reload /dev entries and fire up alsamixer. It should solve the issue. Nothing seems to help! any ideas?

ALSA is weird. For my sound card, I have to compile it as a module and then run alsaconfig which automatically loads the module and restores the sound settings. I would also recommend making sure the alsasound service is running: /etc/init.d/alsasound start
Let me know if that helps at all. Good luck!

I don't see a module for alsa when I do a lsmod....does lsmod only list modules loaded, if so can I somehow list all modules?.....because modprobe alsa returns no module alsa found?......does this mean i may have my kernel messed up?
edit: Code: | /etc/init.d/alsasound start returns * Caching service dependencies ... [ ok ]
* Service alsasound starting
Could not detect custom ALSA settings. Loading all detected alsa drivers.
Unable to find any ALSA drivers. Have you compiled alsa-drivers correctly?
ERROR: Failed to load necessary drivers
ALSA failed to load. [ !! ]

Most likely, but it's nothing to worry about. Just edit your kernel config and make sure you set up your sound device and alsa options as modules. Alsa doesn't like to start properly if it's compiled directly into the kernel.
Blessed be!
