I hate to embarrass myself, but I unmerged coreutils. Yes, emerge told me this was a no-no. Did I listen? No-no.

The threads I found elsewhere in this forum weren't working for me, so I booted up a livecd, thinking to download a stage tarball and unpack it. For some reason, I ran out of space, so I deleted the /usr directory.

SNAFUd again.

I cannot just start over. I have files on the computer I've nuked. I need to at least get my files out, and I don't know how.

Any advice on either fixing my little Ferndando Poo crisis, or advice on how to get my files off this machine, would be GREATLY appreciated. I mean, I will bake you cookies and rub your feet.

Ok, I won't rub your feet, but I'm good for the cookies if you ever come to town.

If you can't access the files by mounting the filesystems, it's probably more worth it to give up :(

There are ways to undelete on ext2/3, but they aren't very good - give them a try, though.

If I were you, I'd boot up the livecd and then mount your root partition (and then any other partitions you used excluding swap) and copy your needed files over to a flash drive or something (assuming you have one). If you don't have a flash drive, you could always make a small partition and mount it and copy over your files to that partition for safekeeping. Then you could reinstall Gentoo and copy them back over.

*Whew*

Files are all still there. Got my partition mounted.

I don't have a flash drive, and I have more files than will fit on one anyway.

How can I get mount working with CIFS on the livecd? I can mount a shared folder that's on another computer and copy them over. I keep getting return code -22 for mount -t cifs //192.168.1.101/folder mountpoint, so I assume this means CIFS isn't an option unless I do something.

I'm not sure if mount-cifs is included with the livecd (it might be). This is a link to the manual page for mount.cifs.

I got sysresccd and was able to cp my files to a network drive. I'm now starting over with 2008 beta and KDE instead of Gnome - why not?

Thanks, poly_poly-man and Maliwik. I appreciate it.

You're quite welcome!

Also, make sure you put [Solved] or something similar in the title of your first post so people know that the problem is solved =)
