I realized that (including me), many Forum users seem to be people which haven't got much experience with linux. I learned the basics about Linux the last year in school, mostly we worked with the shell, learned things about the filesystem, userrights etc..
I think gentoo is the perfect distribution to learn and understand Linux. The Documentation is very good, so no one who knows the basics of linux, which everyone can learn with knoppix in 1 week (shell commands like ls, mkdir, cat/less/more or whatever, basics about filesystem and it's structure and about userrights...more you don't have to know because the install-documentation tells you everything you need.
Before I installed gentoo two weeks ago I tried Mandrake. The result: installing software suxx, the documentation suxx ...and so you can't learn and after 2 days you boot windows again.
...I'm talking too much.
So...I always (exept in this forum) read gentoo is nothing for noobs. I think it is the best distro a noob can get.
[I choosed max 3 month ...the year I learned it in school i had to use it and most of the time was theory] _________________ -- Raider heißt jetzt Twix --

I first tried Linux 4 years ago, but only on and off. I've been using Gentoo pretty much exclusively for about 4 months now. I never managed to find a distro that did everything I needed until Gentoo. Now I wonder how I ever did without it. |

The poll is completely fscked - there are multiple versions of the same answer..
I've used Linux so long I love the same choices over and over again ? |

read the 3rd post and you'll see why there are multiple versions of the same answer...would be nice if a moderator could change it _________________ -- Raider heißt jetzt Twix -- |

IIRC it was 5 years ago I installed linux for the first time ( I didn't have a clue, so it took me another 2 years before I really started using it) |

running at least one box with linux only since 1999
and since early 2002 i use no more windows. _________________ Markus Nigbur |

2 years installing mandrakes, redhats, suses, libranets, and a few others.
3 mos use of a suse. 4 mos use of gentoo.
i like gentoo, i use it as my personal desktop. i am not a programmer or computer guy, but i am about to embark on learning mysql, using gentoo.
i learned alot about linux from gentoo. i learned some from redhat and the huge volume of doc re: redhat, i learned little from suse, but everything worked, and i learned essentialy nada from mandrake. |

I been using Linux for almost 5 years now. I know I wasted 3 of these years on distro like Caldera OpenLinux, Makdrake, RedHat and other non-cusomizable linux environement...
I have to agree with haarbi, Mandrake sux. I used it in my early Linux time because I didn't knew it was that bad...
A few weeks later, I switched to a LFS system. This system gave me hell of a headache!
I learned so many thing with LFS, but it's a nightmare to build a whole system and to config manualy every single packages...
Almost a year ago I tryed Gentoo and I found that it's a good compromise between, the custom build but time consuming of a LFS and the non-costumizability but time-saving of a pre-built distro.

Been using Gentoo linux for almost 4 months now. Was introduced late last year by my former Employer, so i got hooked.
Been using RedHat before that. 2 and a half years with RedHat, Caldera, or FreeBSD. At the time, I soooooooo wanted to stay away from Windows... DIE WINDOWS! ! !
I tried Mandrake. When I noticed it was using Eurpoean standards rather than American (which is what I was completely and utterly used to), I dropped it. I have this pet peeve about not being able to switch from European standards to American, and the Mandrake version I had didn't do it well |

First heard of it in 1993. Installed it in 1994. Heavily started using it in 1996 and haven't gone back. _________________ -mark |
