http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2003-07/msg01537.html

The bit that's probably of most interest to the Gentoo users:

Quote:

optimization:
11198 -O2 -frename-registers generates wrong code (aliasing problem)
11304 Wrong code production with -fomit-frame-pointer
11381 volatile memory access optimized away
11536 [strength-reduce] -O2 optimization produces wrong code
11557 constant folding bug generates wrong code

All can rejoice, 3.3.1 should hit a server near you very soon, untill then use the prerelease (I think Gentoo's GCC 3.3-r1 ebuild includes most of it)

So once these are fixed, 3.3.1 will be out?

Out of curiousity, what major advantages does 3.3(.1) offer over 3.2(.x)?

I've heard quite a bit about compilation speed ups, reduced binary size and increased binary performance for 3.4 (presumably over 3.2), but not too much about the tangible improvements of 3.3 over 3.2.

These are fixed

I wrote a long reply to this one and epiphany crashed...

basically.. gcc 3.3 good, gcc 3.2 bad.. gcc 3.4 will be even better - gcc 3.5 will be GODLIKE !!

Lovechild: Yeah, I think I read something on some mailing list about auto vectoring or something in 3.5 or 3.6, it sounded _awesome_ from what I read about it.

GCC has gotten a lot of backing lately - Apple, IBM and AMD have all been contributing a lot to development, I think GCC is the model OSS project of this year. I'm personally inclied to following the mailing list just to check out all the brain power in motion, and there are a lot of talented people working for free bringing you the compiler that we all know and love. I think to many people overlook GCC, in favor of more flashy projects like GNOME and KDE, which is a shame since GCC is one of the cornerstones of Linux, where would we be without a truely free compilerset?

I'm personally looking forward to the introduction of the IBM 4way PPC970 server, since that's one of the most interesting platforms right now that's "affordable" (well, if you're a mild fanatic at least). With this setup we should see the true power of GCC rear it's big beautiful head.

Don't forget that the number of developers with expertise in compiler building is rather limited. I don't think that the typical KDE or Gnome developer would be a good help for gcc and vice versa.

And a typical user should not see gcc at all, just the applications they work with.
