Occasionally I get about 6 of these messages during the boot process:

Code:
hdc: drive not ready for command

I'm using 2.6.24-gentoo-r7 with gentoo-sources. I've started to get these messages since I've updated the kernel.

part of dmesg:

if it does this without a disc, it could be bad. Do you have another operating system installed? Does it work with that OS? Can you boot from it?

Blessed be!

Yea, the drive works fine... opens/closes and reads data fine. I think it may have something to do with the kernel and the latest transition to SCSI. Or perhaps the IRQ are conflicting. I've followed some guides like https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4570091.html#4570091 but that did not work.

IRQ conflict is doubtful, unless you have three or four different drive controllers. Could you post your .config file and the results of lspci?

Thanks

Blessed be!
Pappy

I don't see anything really out of the ordinary here. I have done some tweaks on your kernel, but I am not sure if the tweaks will help you. Could you please send your /etc/fstab file so I can take a look at it?

Thanks.

Blessed be!
Pappy

Ok, now we have the possible root of the problem here. Assuming you are using KDE, XFCE, or GNOME, you should not invoke a CDROM drive in fstab. You should install hal and dbus, and comment out the invocation of /dev/cdrom in /etc/fstab. Invoking /dev/cdrom as you have stops it from being able to automount under hal/dbus. See this document for some details.

By the way, I did some tweaking to your kernel. The finished .config is here...

Blessed be!
Pappy

I'm not sure what you exactly mean but I'm not using any desktop environment.
I'll see the .config file... it's not suppose to be edited directly, right?

Ok...in that case, then you're fine. However, if you have two CDROM drives, why don't you invoke both? You could to it like so in your /etc/fstab file:
Code:
/dev/hda6               /boot           ext2            defaults,noatime        1 2
/dev/hda7               none            swap            sw              0 0
/dev/hda8               /               ext3            noatime         0 1
/dev/hdc              /mnt/cdrom0      auto            noauto,user     0 0
/dev/hdd              /mnt/cdrom1      auto            noauto,user     0 0
proc                    /proc           proc            nodev,nosuid,noexec     0 0
shm                     /dev/shm        tmpfs           nodev,nosuid,noexec     0 0

That would mean you would have to enter 'mkdir /mnt/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom1' (without apostrophes) to make those directories, and you would have to manually mount them by entering 'mount /dev/hdc' or 'mount /dev/hdd'. Easy stuff, but not automatic.

I have never directly edited a .config file because the tools to configure it do a fantastic job. It is quite trimmed, but I was unsure of whether you were using your nvida or intel video device for display. Other than that, it should work fine. Save your original .config just in case.

Blessed be!

I made your changes and I can mount hdd and hdc fine, however the error 'hdc: drive not ready for command' is still there. What's weird about it is that it only shows in about 1 out of every 3 boots.

When the error is NOT shown this is what part of dmesg looks like:
Code:

I think i fixed the problem however I don't know what I did exactly to fix it. :?
Initially I compiled the kernel with ATA/ATAPI/MFM/... support and the error was being shown. Then I compiled the kernel with experimental pata driver and it was still giving me error messages. I've followed pappy_mcfae instructions and again I've recompiled the kernel with the old ATA/ATAPI/MFM/ as I did the first time and the error messages went away, somehow. The only changes I think I made so far are with fstab and separating the two drives like pappy_mcfae suggested.
Thanks for your help pappy_mcfae. I'll try to reproduce the error and see what exactly went wrong.

##### UPDATE ######

By default the kernel adds some support to the ATA/ATAPI/MFM/ section that causes errors with the cd drive.
I removed the following from the kernel, likely one or more of these is the source of the error:
[ ] use multiple sector mode for programmed...
<> Intel PIIXn Chipsets support
<> AMD and Nvidia ide support

Both most likely...and as long as both drives are mountable, who cares about an error? I have errors that pop up every now and again, and they mean nothing.

Glad I could help.

Blessed be!
Pappy
