Hi,
I have a laptop with 2 GB RAM and i run KDE.
At this time that i am writing the KDE System Guard indicates:
X -> VmSize = 1.491.100
-> VmRss = 1.134.104
Is this normal???
I have set 1 GB of swap memory and about 100 MB of it is used. I really don't think this is normal.
Usually i have open Firefox, Evolution, Amarok, Akregator and Skype... I don't run any weird application apart from ksmoothdock.
Has anyone any idea of what is happening???
Thanks! |

I've found some X applications end up causing the X server to allocate memory but not using it. This makes the X memory footprint blow up. Try quitting some of your apps (like firefox) and see if it goes down. It won't always go back down to when you fresh start it, and yes, memory leaks are possible... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Because of the way that memory is tracked in Linux, the X server is shown as using far more memory than it actually is. For example, that 1400 MB that X is shown as using includes the entire memory of your video card, and a great deal of memory that's shared with other applications.
A quick check of the 550 MB that X is using on my home computer indicates that the memory usage breaks down as follows:
256 MB: Video memory. Doesn't count since it's sitting on the video card.
120 MB: Memory shared with other applications.
50 MB: Shared libraries.
130 MB: Memory that X is actually using. |

Thanks guys!
I finally found that ksmoothdock was the problem! After quiting it i have a VmSize = 300 MB and a VmRss = 50 MB.
I noticed that when running ksmoothdock and i switch virtual desktops the memory usage is increasing!!!
So, i quit using the application and return to the native kde's taskbars.
Thanks! |
