I've made some progress getting my rt61-based pci card working with the built-in kernel support. iwlist wlan0 scan pulls up my AP. I can have it associate, and it looks lovely. dhcpcd completes, and ifconfig wlan0 lists an IP address. ping www.google.com...times out every time. My ethernet connection works (though I guess I need netplug or something to keep it from trying to connect when unplugged), but my desk has no wires running to it. Am I missing something obvious?
Looking at the forums, this may have been a bad time to get an rt61 wireless card.

| I'm using kernel 2.6.24-gentoo-r4, no encryption, and I can't ping other computers. Also, my ethernet connection still tries to take precedence even after I unplugged it a couple reboots ago trying to get this working. |

The latest Linux 2.6.25 kernel has a heck of a lot of bug fixes to the rt2x00 drivers. Perhaps you should switch to that before trying anything else.
Right now I'm using the 2.6.25 kernel's rt61pci driver with wpa_supplicant package. They work fine with my Edimax EW-7628Ig card, though it took some time to figure out the correct configuration. |

I will give that a shot as soon as the current emerge -uDNa world finishes up (I wanted my computer to be doing something while I waited). I'll let you know how it goes.
Funny how every time I try to do a 'stable' gentoo install, there's some dealbreaker issue that requires me to use an 'unstable' package. This is why I always ended up using ~x86 globally in the past. Ah, Gentoo. It's been 3 years, but nothing has changed. |
