Ok, I'm curious about other Gentooers keywords habits, so show your files to me :wink:
I did search for a similar topic but did'nt encounter any, so if this shows to be a dupe I'm sure that some kind Mod/Adm will tell me :D
Cheers

I have
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
in my /etc/make.conf, so /etc/portage/package.keywords is non-existant on my box. :)

Yea. ~x86 is all stable here, except that some stuff like OO.o doesn't like GCC 3.4, but oh well. That's being fixed. Then again, I'm not using Reiser4 with an -mm kernel or anything, so ymmv...

/me hugs his stable ext3 and reiserfs (v3) partitions.

I having thoughts about tossing GCC 3.4 in my package.keywords, is it a big difference when compiling, towards 3.3?

I really should alphatize this. I initially was putting the ~x86 in after each line but now I don't bother. It seems to understand what I mean. Can someone tell me why I should or should not do this.

The main reason is that there would be no problems when emerge -u world, that any programs will be downgraded. If you have a mixed system, stable/unstable packages.
But if you build your whole system with ~x86 there is no need to put any file in the package.keywords file.

This would sort the file.
Code:
cat /etc/portage/package.keywords | sort > package.keywords.new

EDIT: This adds ~x86 only to lines that don't already have it:
Code:
cat package.keywords.new| sed '/~x86/!s/$/ ~x86/' > package.keywords.new

Anyway, I don't have a package.keywords file. All ~x86 here.

Same Here. I really dont understand all the bleeding edge thing. ppl in my LUG always say that about me. im the only one who uses gentoo and they all use debian or Fedora or SuSe. i dont get the bleeding edge thing when things go x86 i usually use them and sometimes i dont. My system is a mixture of both. As far as stability my machine runs flawlessly for me. My fav apps come out with a new version and i just want it as soon as possible. I dont do much hard masking stuff i like to wait til it hits ~x86. The bleeding edge thing confuses me i guess :idea:

Code:

sys-libs/libstdc++-v3 -*
sys-kernel/linux-headers -*
sys-devel/gcc -*
sys-libs/glibc -*

And for the rest I run ~x86.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces....

Hey thanks for the commands. I did not know about the sort command.

Odd question, this may not be the place to ask it but how do you get certain packages updated from ~x86 to x86. There are few packages that are like that in my list that I see no good reason that they should not be x86.

Thanks again for the help.

Same Here. I really dont understand all the bleeding edge thing. ppl in my LUG always say that about me. im the only one who uses gentoo and they all use debian or Fedora or SuSe.
Mother Theresa and her abacus probably calls you bleeding edge too ;p

I have it set to ~ on my box also. (works flawlessly) My x86-64 and sparc64 boxen have some packages set to ~x86 because they work fine and are masked. (nothing important- just pagers and minor utilities. Oh, they're both set to ~amd64 and ~sparc64 systemwide respectively) I'll post those when I get around to it.

Same here, 100% ~x86 (except xorg-x11 and ati-drivers)

I don't see any reason for *not* using ~x86 on a desktop machine. Maybe my system is a little bit bleeding edge but who cares. It Just Works.

Well, since everything else is ~x86, I don't see the need for anything bigger. There aren't that many packages that go through -* before ~x86. ;)

At least half of that is probably stuff that I added once because I wanted to try them out, and have been too lazy to remove since.
