Hi all Gentoo gurus!

I've a stable system running Gentoo 1.4
the server has got only one CPU and now it is used for 80 - 90%

I would like to upgrade the system using the SMP with a second CPU.
The questions are:
1) is "intelligent" do this? will I improve the performance from single to double CPUs?

2) Should I rebuild the system or the server packages with emerge?

Really thank you

Quick answers; 1=Yes, 2=No

While it depends on the usage, in most cases simply having more than one cpu/core can help due multitasking, and seeing as how in your the cpu is almost tasked to it's limit then it would definitely be a good move.

Unless that 80 - 90% is all from one process, of course...

Apart from the kernel, you shouldn't need to rebuild anything, just remember to change the MAKEOPTS setting in make.conf.

Hi,

"It depends" :) If the load is coming from multiple processes, then yes I think SMP will definitely help. I don't think you need to emerge anything new, you just have to compile your kernel with SMP support (if it is not already). Everything else should just work automatically.

It's the last "version" of the stage tarballs/profiles/live cd's used before they switched to the year.release naming scheme with 2004.0.

Damnit, I feel old.
