You should have bothered to read the first post of this thread (and pretty much every other post in it), the front page announcement on gentoo.org, and the April GMN, as they all reference the same guide.

Accidental upgrade on an amd64 (with baselayout ~amd64 - apparently %) ) here:
I dusted off a machine that has been sitting in a wardrobe for a couple of months, and ran emerge -uvDN system. Had a couple of wrinkles to smooth out (an old orphaned libstdc++ in /lib killed lzma). Ran etc-update and rebooted.

Only then did I notice OpenRC. Didn't realize it had eaten net.eth0 at first - but I recreated the symlink - and up it went. It wasn't until I noticed it had reverted to nano as $EDITOR, and I started digging into the configs that I realized it was a major upgrade.

No stupid unnecessary breakage here. I'd say this seems very well done upgrade!

Can someone tell when (approximately) will openrc hit stable? I ask because I would really like to see it on the new install cd that developers are preparing. If that doesn't happen we will have to go through this openrc migration guide with every new install... and we know that for new install media we have to wait... another year or so... I saw that livecd-tools does not work with openrc, I just hope there will be beta3, 4, 5... until this is ready.

I've just installed baselayout-2 and the transition seemed to go fine! There was a problem on the first reboot (with rc_parallel set to "yes") where the system hung after restoring alsa mixer levels, but a hard reset followed by an interactive boot seemed to fix the problem. I have since set rc_parallel to "no" and everything's ok, although that GDM pid error has returned on shutdown.

Migration went fine.
And cherry on the cake : grub to kdm, from 33s to 28,5 s.
Parallel rc boot doesn't reduce timing, so I guess my harddisk bottleneck is hit.

having emerge not protect /etc/env.d/ by default is probably a bad idea, especially since we're now supposed to edit config files in there (90xsession) that get overwritten without asking with every update. :evil:

that or ebuilds that put stuff in /etc/env.d/ that has to be edited by the user, should come with a logic that does not overwrite it if it already exists. Although that's a stupid solution.

so far after switching to ~arch / baselayout-2 / openrc this is the only issue that came up, and it's a minor one. so good work

Installing openRC on a reiser4 system will prevent if from booting. This has been known for 8 months but is still broken :bug #195988

It's marked as fixed but ain't . Some seem to find closing a bug easier than fixing it.

If you dont want a totally fscked up system don't do it.

See the support thread first.

And by the way why the hell isn't there a warning at the top of this thread?

Please add one.

Otherwise a very nice guide . Sadly that one omission has cost me a day digging around and it ain't fixed yet. Please add a note in a promenant place.

Hmm, too bad if that's really still not fixed. But seeing reiser4 still not inside the vanilla kernel (or any other one officially supported by Gentoo), such a warning should really be placed in the reiser4 support thread first. Would be nice here too, but it will only get important when reiser4 finally hits vanilla- or gentoo-sources (I hope it does in the not-too-far future...).

It is reiser4progs , a PORTAGE package that has a non std hack by gentoo devs , that is causing the problem.

This is an issue which comes up using openRC and this thread should carry a warning. I needed to know this before this migratation , not when I try to reboot and find my system fscked by the changes.

That's the whole point of this guide, surely.

As for the "if this is not fixed" comment , I did not make this all up because I had nothing to do for the day and thought this would be a cool way to waste a day of my life. Apparently this is Vapier's idea of "resolved:fixed" which seems to rely on committing patches without testing them. :roll:

I'm not sure kernelOfTruth's patch is the final answer but it got me my system back. Thx kot.

Just upgraded today. Between this and KMS, my laptop boots up in no time. I think it now spends more time counting the RAM than it does booting Gentoo. :lol:

The upgrade also showed me how much crud I had on my system. I can't believe I still had 915resolution installed! :oops:

Can't wait for this to hit stable.
