Hey,
This is a weird one for me as I'm not sure where to start looking. I've been running just fine, and don't recall changing anything lately (I'm guessing I am wrong on this assumption, however I do know I did not mess with the kernel itself nor the grub.conf file), and my wife changed user to log in as herself. When she did this gnome crashed on her, with a error message on the cmd line interface. I didn't bother to write it down as I figured she just did something weird, I'd reboot, look at logs, and see what happened. I can't start the machine up at all however. I hit the power button, see the bios flash, and then just get a blinker cursor. Not boot loader or anything. When I look at log files, nothing is updating either. I thought that the hard drive got corrupted (running ssd), so I checked the partitions and everything checked out fine--especially the boot partition.
I'm a bit at a loss for how to troubleshoot, as I'm not sure what's stopping it from loading. I believe hardware is all fine as I can boot from the CD (to do the filesystem check) just fine. Is there a way I can tell how it's failing? What causes grub to load? Is there a way to see if that's even being called? This is definitely a new one for me!
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide! |

I had not, but I have now. Boot back in, added networking, fixed the /dev directory, and then ran emerge grub, followed by grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sda
It said no errors were found. I then rebooted, and I still have the same problem...straight to blinking cursor. As the only thing that worked was the bios, I went in there...what a surprise, I have two hard drives, and the bleeping bootup order had swapped. I've never heard of that happening before. Learn something new every day!
Jaglover--thanks for the reply. Painful experience, but it helped prove it wasn't anything linux related! |
