|
|
I just updated my gentoo system and then ran revdep-rebuild. All seems ok with the system except I can't play any videos any more. The following is what xine does if I attempt to launch it:
| Code: | xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.5.
(c) 2000-2007 The xine Team.
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (XVideo)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 ()
Value in failed request: 0x3e002c5
Serial number of failed request: 2204
Current serial number in output stream: 2206
|
All video players I have tried (xine, mplayer, totem) report similar errors like "BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)" when I try to open them which leads me to believe that it is something common among them all such ass me video drivers.
I am using ati-drivers but didn't notice any updates to it. But I may have missed that.
Anyone have any ideas? |

ffmpeg and transcode are always the usual suspects for me ... try to rebuild them _________________ "Dear Enemy: may the Lord hate you and all your kind, may you be turned orange in hue, and may your head fall off at an awkward moment."

| It actually started working again for a while.....but now the same thing is happening again. All my video players crash immediately when opened. I tried re-emerging ffmpeg and even xine-lib and xine-ui but no change. Anyone know what is wrong here? I really suspect the ati drivers but I have no idea of how to figure it out. |

| If you suspect the video driver to be at fault, try a different driver (such as vga or vesa), if only for diagnostic purposes. |

Oh yes I have..many times It actually has one it wants to rebuild but it fails to build....totem. But I don't use that one anyway and it seems to think xine and mplayer are all peachy.
I'm going to try what was suggested above and see if the normal vesa driver works and report back here.
EDIT: Ok, I went into X using the vesa driver this time and while xine and mplayer stuttered when they opened, they worked.
Then I went into the xine options and set it to use "Opengl" for video output instead of auto (which I think it trys to use XV). XV used to work but it looks like it is now broken in the ati drivers. Thanks AMD/ATI. I have had a laptop for two years with crappy linux video drivers the whole time. I wonder if they will ever get it right before I buy a new computer. |

i have problems with both xine and mplayer as well.
all problems seem to stem from the xv and opengl drivers sine xshm works but has poor playback.
running xine and mplayer from the konsole work with xv strangely enough.
if i try to use the xv driver in xine-ui the video appears as a bunch of distorted horizontal colored lines. which makes no sense since i removed the config dir.
gmplayer works but pressing stop will crash it just like kaffeine.
i can't be too sure of anything with gmplayer if i open the setup and let it sit it will crash within a few seconds (10-15ish)
since both opengl and xv have issues i would point my finger at ati since if i set things to use xshm all problems go away even the above setup crash in gmplayer.
any input of this stuff? _________________ ~AMD64

First of all, you shouldn't use gmplayer. It's as good as deprecated. Either use mplayer from the commandline, or use a modern frontend, such as smplayer, gnome-mplayer or kmplayer. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

thanks for the advice i forgot to mention this but i do use a mplayer frontend: kplayer is my favorite
i only use gmplayer for troubleshooting purposes but if it deprecated I'll disable it.
EDIT: i haven't yet noticed any problems with kplayer _________________ ~AMD64

| I realise it's a very old issue but did anyone solve it? Just recently I started getting similar symptoms. Can't play any video files (avi etc.) because it crashes Xorg. Webcam causes the same thing. Can't say exactly when it started to happen as I don't watch videos on my computer too often but it's annoying. What log files should I check for more information? Thanks. |

Caleb9, if you are using ati-drivers 11.11 or 11.12 and your media players are configured to use Xv (XVideo) then that causes the X.Org Server to crash. It's a bug in Catalyst for Linux 11.11 and 11.12 (see Gentoo Bug Report No. 391193). A work-around for the time being is to go into Preferences in Xine, MPlayer, SMPlayer etc and select OpenGL instead of XVideo for the video output. Unfortunately there is no way (that I know of) to do this for Skype, so I can't use Skype with video at the moment. I just hope AMD fixes the FGLRX driver and version 12.x does not do this, as it's a pain. _________________ Fitzcarraldo's blog |

| Fitzcarraldo thanks for your answer. Yeah I use 11.11, I guess I'll just go back to 11.10 for the time being then. |
