I started using Gentoo as my first foray into linux (in at the deep end!) quite a few years ago. Had it up and running for a couple of years before I switched to Ubuntu because of spending too much time keeping the system working (especially in the case of mythtv) and fixing many glitches and compile errors etc...
While Ubuntu is a breeze to setup and get working, if it breaks (as it did when a hard drive started playing up) it is almost impossible to fix and would have required a full reinstall. Add to that the fact that the support forums are less than USELESS (how many zero reply threads can there be on one forum!?) and you have the reason I switched back to gentoo.
Mythtv seems to have matured a bit and is much easier to setup / maintain and if you do have any problems, people actually answer you on the forums! Everything has compiled out of the box for me since I switched back too.
So. I am glad to be back and will be staying for the foreseeable future...

Welcome back.
Regarding the uselessness of Ubuntu forums... well, Ubuntu is a distro that many newcomers to Linux try, so I guess a great number of the users of the forums are newbies. Instead, Gentoo is a distro that, mostly, people try once they already have some experience. That's why it's easier to find help in Gentoo forums. Well, that's my guess.

You are right but I got a pm for help about something I had posted. Spent 10 mins typing stuff, copying config files, explaining stuff to them and then no response. Nothing. Nada. Zip... That is just plain rude. Oh well!
