hey there... I just installed gentoo last night.

I'm unable to boot into my gentoo installation however. I got GRUB working fine, but my boot hangs HARD at the sysvinit line (can't tell if it's before or during sysvinit startup). I have to hard reboot it at that point. I've tried many different kernel configuration setups, but the only sysvinit-related option is turned on (sysv-fs is off, though, but this shouldn't matter)

Anyone have any clues for me? here's what it looks like when it boots right before it hangs... there are no errors that i can see in the boot messages before this, either, to give me any clues:

kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
Mounted devfs on /dev
Freeing unused kernel memory: 276k freed
INIT: version 2.83 booting

---
and then it chokes. My boot and root partitions are ext3, support for which I have compiled into the kernel rather than as a module.... devfs support is compiled in, as is SystemV message support... Oh, also my kernel source package is redhat-sources.

I don't know what else to try!

Thanks for your help,
-ben

Hmm... this is a weird one. Everything looks okay (root filesystem is mounted, init script is called...) except... hmm...

Could you try vanilla-sources? Problems are often solved by using them. ;)

vanilla-sources boots fine for me. I'll dig into why redhat-sources was so weird later on... I'm just glad to have a working system now.

thanks for your help!
