|
|
This relates to an earlier post I made in "Installing Gentoo": https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=5846
Seems like it's a GCC3 related bug, now that I've re-installed Gentoo four times on two systems...
Replication instructions:
1) Grab a Gentoo v1.2 stage1 ISO, start from step 1 of the installation process. Switch your /etc/make.profile link to the GCC3 default profile, and bootstrap.
2) Re-bootstrap with GCC3.
3) Emerge system. Maybe I'm just dumb, but I've set -berkdb in USE, and that goddamned db-4.0.14 package STILL shows up in an emerge system. Oh well.
Somewhere along the line you'll run into db-4.0.14 (and if you don't, please tell me how the heck you managed to avoid it.) Emerge will halt in cp, either with an "invalid argument" or "argument list too long" error, and pretty much force you to start from step 1 of the install process (or at least I haven't figured out how to get db-4.0.14 out of that emerge list.)
I never ran into this when using gcc 2.95.3 to compile bootstrap and system, nor did I run into this when using gcc 2.95.3 for bootstrap and then gcc 3.1 for system. Maybe there's something in fileutils that's hosed.
If anybody else runs into this problem, I'd love to hear about it; conversely, if NOBODY else runs into this problem, I'd like to hear about it, too, because that means that I've either (1) not written down my process correctly or (2) both my machines (a PII/400 and an Athlon/850) are concidentally screwed up in the same way.
USE flags for the two machines were:
PII/400 bootstrap:
CXXFLAGS/CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O2 -pipe"
PII/400 system:
CXXFLAGS/CFLAGS="-march=pentium2 -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"
Athlon/850 first bootstrap:
CXXFLAGS/CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O2 -pipe"
Athlon/850 second bootstrap:
CXXFLAGS/CFLAGS="-march=athlon -O2 -pipe"
Athlon/850 system:
CXXFLAGS/CFLAGS="-march=athlon -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" |

small update: tried the Gentoo 1.3b stage1 tarball.
bootstrap:
CXXFLAGS = CFLAGS="-march=athlon -O2 -pipe"
emerge system:
CXXFLAGS = CFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"
Got the same error as above, same library, same place. I'm wondering why nobody else seems to be experiencing this... |
