|

Concerning mol... Does it utilize Macintosh OSX drivers for the hardware while operating in the Mac environment? Or is it dependent upon Linux hardware drivers?
I guess the source of my question comes from my concern over the current lack of 3d acceleration for nVidia chipsets on the powerbook. I really do not want to dual boot for gaming goodness. I am simply trying to evaluate the 12" iBook vs the 12" Powerbook. I will be buying within a month.
Thanks for your thoughts, reference material and discussion. _________________ -----------------------------------------

The FAQ for MOL (http://www.maconlinux.org/faq.html) doesn't give a direct and clear answer to your question, but the first two items suggest that you can not use normal video drivers within the guest OS. It appears that the guest OS is provided with an virtual video device, which is mapped to operations on the actual (X11/fbdev/VNC) video device. |

You will have to dual boot. There is no way Linux going to yield the entire graphics card to a userspace program! (Other than X11) |

That's what I thought, but wanted to make sure. Thanks for the response. Looks like I am going for the 12" iBook with its ATI card, then.
Anyone have any rumors/info on when the next update to the iBook series will be? I would hate to buy one with a G3 proc in it and have a G4 version come out 1-2 months later. That bit me when I bought my powerbook and Apple switched to PowerPC procs. Never did buy the $500 upgrade for that thing. _________________ -----------------------------------------

IBM just released a 1.1GHz PowerPC G3.
TiBook 15" is an ATI machine, but is slower than the AlBooks. Twice the price of an iBook too.
MacWorld CreativePro is going on, they just might announce a 15" AlBook... Unlikely though. Steve Jobs usually announces new hardware, on Day 1. |
