|

Greetings Gentoo users and developers,
My name is Marc and I am new here. If you would like, you can call me either Marc or Scorpio. Either name is fine.
My computer is a Dell Optiplex SX260 (Intel 845 chipset) and I am using the genkernel. Last time I checked, the kernel is allowing Atmel cards to work. My apologies if this question has been asked a million times already.
Anyway, I've been having trouble with getting my MA-101 card to work on Gentoo. I've installed wpa_supplicant and wireless-tools I still cannot get iwconfig to find wlan0 as a card. I'm assuming I need some sort of atmel driver. I tried installing the driver from: http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net/news.html but it seems like the kernel I'm using may be too new for this driver.
If anybody could please help, I would appreciate it.
Thanks for reading,
Marc

Could you give us the output of:
Code: |
cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep ATMEL

Your signature proves to be true. Before reading it, I decided I'd temporarily move back to another distro and it just happened to be Ubuntu. I just need it to get a few tasks done quickly but I am currently downloading the Gentoo LiveDVD and will certainly install it again. I've lost the battle but I haven't lost the war. Ubuntu is sometimes very irritating due to its lack of stability in certain areas. Sometimes I have to reboot so much that it even makes Windows look good.
Thank you very much for replying anyway. I will soon get back to you. |

Okay, here's the output of the command you told me:
Code: | CONFIG_ATMEL=m
CONFIG_PCI_ATMEL=m
CONFIG_PCMCIA_ATMEL=m

I've just started paying closer attention to the Gentoo Handbook and am going to try what it says. Apologies for being ignorant. |

Okay, I've configured the kernel on my own this time and installed it, as well as I have tought WPA_Supplicant how to use all three atmel drivers but # ifconfig wlan0 still tells me that no such device exists. Is there something I have missed?
Thanks,
Marc |

I think I just may have found the root cause of all of this. I have been noticing that when GNOME loads into the desktop, the splash screen only initializes all the way up to Nautilus and then stops. After this happens, I get a fast error message that pops up for a split second and the goes away. I have a strong feeling that gentoo is not initializing any of my peripherals (besides mouse and keyboard) as my soundcard also fails to work. Does anybody know a solution to this problem?
P.S. If any admins read this topic, you have my permission to move this topic to the appropriate forum and change the title as this doesn't seem to be a direct networking issue.
Thanks,
Marc |

Okay, it appears as though this whole time I've installed Gentoo improperly. I'm actually glad I found this out on my own rather than somebody just giving me the answer.
I guess this topic can be deleted if the mods want to do so. |

Had a hectic month so far, sorry for only noticing everything now.
Everything working now?

Unfortunately not. While you were gone I did some more distro hopping. I may install Gentoo again if I can find a more stable snapshot of the LiveCD. Mine seems to be extremely buggy and limits me to a Standard Networkless install. Otherwise it just crashes. |

Okay, I've got Gentoo on my computer again and I am trying to build the Rev. B driver. My only problem is that when I run Config.sh and finish answering the questions it asks, it gives me an error saying:
Code: | bash: scripts/setup.sh: No such file or directory
run again with the proper directory
cat: .configtmp: No such file or directory |
