some quick clues to get this running - stuff the ebuild doesn't do
/etc/xinetd.conf and /etc/xinetd.d/vmware-authd
- add only_from line to support your needed connections
/etc/vmware/hostd/authorization.xml
change <ACEDataUser>vmware to root
make sure http port is correct in
/opt/vmware/server/lib/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-5.5.17/webapps/ui/jslib-1.0.63181/modules/com.vmware.webaccess.app_1.0.0/WebAccess.properties
chmod u+s /opt/vmware/server/sbin/vmware-hostd
== That is what it took to get the webui to respond properly
I am still having trouble getting the proper set of vmware-modules to compile and run and start a vm properly on a 2.6.24 based kernel (currently 2.6.24-zen3, but it's not specific to the zen patchset)
with the vmware-modules-1.0.0.17-r1 I get a vmmon version mismatch, expecting 187 got 138. If I manually edit the VMMON_VERSION lines in vmmon-only/include/iocontrols* so that it sets it to 187 I get an error, and the kernel module crashes.
with vmware-modules-1.0.0.18 I get the same EPOLL/unintptr_t/BIT_MASK undefined/redefined errors that I see everywhere (with no real clues to fix) _________________ Everything is broken......(b.dylan).

Finally - I have this solved. Found a patch file that was close enough to cut and paste (wouldn't apply directly)
I have vmware-modules-1.0.0.18 compiled for VMware Server2 against 2.6.24-zen3 sources
(also have vmware-modules-1.0.0.17-r1 for both Workstation 6 and Server 1.04)
I'm not the code master, so I hesitate to put the patches here, but feel free to send a mail and I'll be happy to hook you up.
vmware server's been up and running solid for several days now, all my VMs work great, and my gentooVM has been running an emerge -e system without any hiccups.
For those of you having your logs filled up by "Host clock rate change request" - I can't find the link to a (get this) Microsoft page, but MS suggests putting "append clock=pit" on your kernel command line. This works on my machines, and should works for MS Virtual server as well. I've not verified how accurately the VM is keeping time.
Thanks to all you who helped me get to this point!!
