| You could install the Firebug plugin for firefox and see if it can tell you what the server responds to your upload request etc., it requires a little know how about web programming or rather about how http uploads are supposed to work. |

My college really doesn't do programming languages.. If the need for it comes up, a small visual basic program is usually crafted together by SOMEBODY somewhere.
And we've used blackboard for a while, but this year we started switching over to moodle, which is open source so I'm assuming any difficulties for linux users aren't there, but i've neve really had any trouble with either of them |
