create man pages

i'd like to create some man pages of my own, and i've found the directory /usr/man/man1 but there is a lot of stuff i dont understand about them...like why is there man1, man2, man3....directories? and there seem to be a lot of syntax stuff in the files, can anybody help me out with that?

hmmm....helps, but it doesn't explain the format used in side the pages
