always during a lengthy emerge the screen blanks out, even though apm and apci are disabled in the bios, and i can't re-activate the screen (key presses, mouse, nothing). Why does the screen blank out, can i stop it doing that or get it to re-activate the screen (geforce 4 ti4200, kernel drivers not installed) _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

Yeah the same happens when I'm emerging, but just a keypress and its back. I'd guess maybe it can be configured in the kernel options somewhere (maybe a flag/option), perhaps if you are running in framebuffer try disabling it. Maybe theres an environmental variable which sets the length of the screen blanking.
Sorry I can't say more than that, I've got a laptop (Dell Insp 8200) and its got ACPI as a module, maybe you need ACPI for it to work???? I'd suggest experimenting with the apm/acpi options (power saving section) perhaps your solution lies there.
Good luck !

Can you not get a virtual terminal by hitting Ctrl + Alt + F1 - F6 ? _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

nope. nothing works, i have to press the restart button
maybe its got something to do with the emerge program? it blanks the screen after ~10 mins of compiling, except it doesnt un blank it for some reason. there must be a setting to disable that... _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

Does it freeze as soon as it blanks out, or do you think it freezes up at some point while the screen is blanked out? I was having a similar problem, but I would keeping hitting a key as soon as the screen blanked and I would eventually see the error message that it was giving. I was getting something about a "kernel bug" while trying to emerge something. I switched to a vanilla kernel and everything is good now. |
