Hi all,
I wanted to check out Gentoo too but installation failes
First the boot process stopped while partition check of second hd.
I know that problem (same with Debian and SuSE), so I fixed it with
the kernel-parameter "ide=nodma". Allright so far but then I get a
kernel panic .................muh................with the followig error message:
.......
.......
NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0/SMP for Linux NET.0
read_super_block: can't find a reiserfs filesystem on (dev 01:00, block 64,
size 1024)
read_super_block: can't find a reiserfs fileystems on (dev 01:00, block 8,
size 1024)
XFS: bad magic number
XFX: SB validate failed
Kernel panic: VFS unable to mount root fs on 01:00
Why is system searching for a Reiser filesystem ???????
I have to hard-discs, first is taken with a Win and a Libranet partition.
On the second I've a SuSE, another Libranet partition and about 1.3 GB
dead space in the end.
Can anybody help ?
Thanks

The kernel is searching for a ReiserFS system because you have ReiserFS support compiled into the kerenel. It doesn't know what type your root filesystem is, so it asks the various drivers to see if they can identify it. If not, as in your case, the kernel can't mount the root filesystem, so it can't continue -- hence, you got a kernel panic.
This is caused by a number of things, but the two most likely things would be to: a) check that you're passing "root=/dev/...", b) check that the "root=" line is correct, and c) check that you have your root filesystem compiled into the kernel (looks like a [*] in menuconfig).
See this thread for details on how to get back into your system to check and/or fix. |

Thanks delta,
do I have to create and format a Gentoo partition first before booting
the install-process......seems so, I'll check it out
