mikdee,
Forgot to mention this- in the .kdesvn/share/config/startupconfigfiles there are these entries: | Code: | kcmrandrrc Display ApplyOnStartup false
!/home/rob/.kde/share/config/kcmrandrrc
!/usr/share/config/kcmrandrrc
!/usr/local/share/config/kcmrandrrc
!/usr/kde/svn/share/config/kcmrandrrc
*
kcmrandrrc [Screen0]
!/home/rob/.kde/share/config/kcmrandrrc
!/usr/share/config/kcmrandrrc
!/usr/local/share/config/kcmrandrrc
!/usr/kde/svn/share/config/kcmrandrrc
* |
I tried changing "false" to "true" but it reverts to false (even if I kill plasma and/or edit/save from a console login. It's as if they are now blocking anyone from editing these files, or something's wrong with my system.
Why would they remove this functionality, as mentioned above, but keep this entry in startup config? _________________ Main box- ASRock 880GM-LE AM3

I know what I'm suggesting isn't nice and may cause trouble, but what happens if you make the startupconfigfiles read-only? I had to do this for the kmailui.rc file, because I found that kmail kept erasing my shortcuts when at startup. Of course, even if it works, this should only be a temporary workaround, until the issue you met has been solved. _________________ Stefano |

Stefano Crocco,
Sorry- I was on Arch when I posted, and forgot the exact entries weren't the same. I had to boot back to gentoo, and edit the above post with the Gentoo file's entries- probably makes no difference.
Your idea is interesting. I'm thinking maybe making the krandrrc file would be the one to make read-only, once I had it edited to "75."
Wouldn't making the startupconfigfiles read only affect all the other settings, and more likely to cause problems? _________________ Main box- ASRock 880GM-LE AM3

Yes, I think you're right. I didn't follow your problem closely, since I don't use krandr and only threw in my suggestion because of your mention of a file which kept being overwritten. If you get the settings you want making only krandrrc read-only, it should certainly be safer. _________________ Stefano |

Thanks much mikedee & and Stefano,
I'll investigate this further. As it stands now, at least I can reset from the panel icon easily, but of course I'd rather not have to do that every time.
EDIT: I changed the krandrrc file to read-only, and indeed the setting remains after restarting kde at the value krandr from the panel icon sets it
(RefreshRate=75.0246734619141) However, the screen resolution still reverts to 17" on a 19" monitor, as is produced by the 74.9021835327148 that it showed before.
In startupconfigkeys, there is this line, but no kcmrandrrc file in .kdesvn.share/config:
| Code: | | kcmrandrrc Display ApplyOnStartup false | If they have this kcmrandrrc file, can someone please post theirs?
For a single monitor, should rotation be set to =0 instead of =1? I have no experience with muiltiple monitors. _________________ Main box- ASRock 880GM-LE AM3

Follow up on screen problem. Here's the relevant files. Only startupconfigkeys reverts to "false" after I edit to to true, from a console login, or from killall plasma. That one file simply defies being edited to: kcmrandrrc Display ApplyOnStartup true. Insane!
kcmrandrrc: (I created this file, after looking at examples on google searches)
| Code: | [Display]
ApplyOnStartup=true
SyncTrayApp=true
[Screen0]
height=1024
reflectX=false
reflectY=false
refresh=75.0246734619141
rotation=0
width=1280 |
krandrrc:
| Code: | [Screen_0]
OutputsUnified=false
UnifiedRect=0,0,0,0
UnifiedRotation=1
[Screen_0_Output_VGA-0]
Active=true
Rect=0,0,1280,1024
RefreshRate=75.0246734619141
Rotation=1

startupconfig (sh script):

kcminputrc_mouse_cursorsize=""
# ksplashrc KSplash Theme Default
ksplashrc_ksplash_theme="Default"

# kcmfonts General forceFontDPI 0
kcmfonts_general_forcefontdpi="0"
# kdeglobals Locale Language '' # trigger requesting languages from KLocale

klocale_languages=en_US
|
startupconfigkeys:
| Code: | kcminputrc Mouse cursorTheme ''
kcminputrc Mouse cursorSize ''
ksplashrc KSplash Theme Default
ksplashrc KSplash Engine KSplashX
kcmrandrrc Display ApplyOnStartup false

kcmrandrrc [Screen1]
kcmrandrrc [Screen2]
kcmrandrrc [Screen3]

kdeglobals Locale Language '' # trigger requesting languages from KLocale

At least I can still reset to 75 from the panel krandrtray icon, as I mentioned, however, I'm at my wit's end on this one. .
EDIT: Tried one last time, and also edited the startupconfigfiles line to "true." I thought I had it, but both problem files startupconfigkeys and startupconfigfiles again reverted to false on reboot, and of course the screen also reverted to 17" size again. Disgusting-I give up. _________________ Main box- ASRock 880GM-LE AM3

you should re-emerge kdelibs
and kdebase(not sure) _________________ Mens sana in corpore sano... Gentoo laetificat cor hominis |

There seems to be a problem with accessin neopumuk/soprano over dbus. I have neopumuk enabled in systemsettyings, so I'm not sure what is going on. |

Has anybody had issues with KDM? Every time I login to any session and then logout, KDM hangs. Could this be related to ATi drivers? I do use them. _________________ BSD > SysV > Linux

Decibel is now located in kdereview instead of playground. I'm sure that the overlay will be updated soon. If you are impatient you could also just change the ebuild from
| Code: | ESVN_REPO_URI="${ESVN_MIRROR}/trunk/playground/pim/decibel/"
ESVN_PROJECT="playground-pim" |
into
| Code: | ESVN_REPO_URI="${ESVN_MIRROR}/trunk/kdereview/decibel/"
ESVN_PROJECT="kdereview" |
and it will compile. |

Follow up to persistent screen resolution problem:
Is this the problem where in they removed "ApplyOnStartup" which apparently is preventing the ability to retain my preferred screen resolution size, as posted about above, and page 29? This happens on both Gentoo and Arch, but not openSuse. Also, after I reset the resolution from the tray icon, if I open kickoff->systemsettings->display, it immediatedly auto-reverts reverts to the incorrect 17" resoloution- just opening the display module itself- before even trying to change anything manually.
http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdebase/workspace/kcontrol/randr/krandrmodule.cpp?r1=758505&r2=763267
It's the diffs in /kdebase/workspace/kcontrol/randr/krandrmodule.cpp. I've just read a little on c++, but could someone who knows something about this please take a look at this, and see if I'm on the right track? I'm thinking I need to put this code back in krandrmodule.cpp, and recompile kdebase.
BTW, the same openSuse config file lines have apply on startup set to "false," but that apparently has no effect and is NOT the problem on Arch & Gentoo, as the 1280x1024@75 setting on openSuse IS retained. I think they still must be using a previous version of krandrmodule.cpp, where "apply on startup" is NOT removed, whereas Gentoo and Arch now have the newer "improved" versions.
I still wonder why nobody else is reporting this problem.
If i just wanted to get rid of krandr, what's the best way to disable it entirely? It's not in services. What about commenting it out in CMakeLists.txt?
EDIT: Just noticed while updating kdebase svn today to r791172 there are some updates to krandr- maybe this problem is adressed here- will find out later on restart kde. | Code: | U workspace/kcontrol/randr/layoutmanager.cpp
U workspace/kcontrol/randr/krandrmodule.cpp
U workspace/kcontrol/randr/krandrtray.desktop
U workspace/kcontrol/randr/randr.desktop |

There is no need to recompile kde with patches, it is possible to disable krandr with a simple checkbox somewhere..
I cant remember where it was now though....
EDIT: Not a checkbox but an xorg configuration
| Code: | Section "ServerFlags"
Option "RandR" "false"
EndSection |

mikedee,
Thanks. I had forgotten about that. However, it would be nice to be able to just set 1280x1024@75 in krandr, and simply have it stay put. If it isn't fixed when I restart after my complete kde svn update, I'll definitely edit in that xorg.conf option, and be done with it. _________________ Main box- ASRock 880GM-LE AM3
