For example, after having changed the options in SystemSettings, I launch konqueror, or kmail, or any other application, and it uses the new settings. After a while, I run another program and it goes back to the default settings.

Among disappearing options there are: almost all those under Appearance (with the exception of the window decoration), the country settings under Country/Language and the paths options, under About Me (the user information, instead, don't disappear).

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? http://bugs.kde.org doesn't contain bug reports about this (at least, I couldn't find any), but maybe it's too early to report one.

same here i created an symlink .kde4.0 --> .kdesvn, some configs are stored but fonts among others no. any advice?

This is what I did:

  • added the following lines to /etc/portage/package.unmask:
    kde-base/kdelibs:kde-4
    kde-base/kdepimlibs:kde-4
    kde-base/kwin:kde-4

  • installed kwin 4.0.0 (obviously, this also installs kdelibs 4.0.0 and kdepimlibs 4.0.0):
    emerge "=kwin-4.0.0"

  • edited my .bashrc, adding the following line:
    export KDEWM=/usr/kde/4.0/bin/kwin

This way, when kde starts, it doesn't use the svn version, but the 4.0.0 one, which doesn't have this bug. Of course, you can install any other window manager instead of kwin 4.0.0 and use it. I tried fluxbox and it works. Someone else tried OpenBox and says that it works. I tried with kwin 3.5.8 and it did not work. The downside of using a window manager different from kwin 4 is that the kde global shortcuts (for example , Alt-F2 for krunner) don't work.[/b][/list]

i'll wait until this bug dissapears in svn, i dont want to run 4.0.0 versions.

SVN includes latest changes to track, better keep it.

thanks for the hint.

sorry my english.

You don't need to use the whole kde 4.0.0, just three packages from it (libs, pimlibs and kwin). Aside from kwin, everything you'll use will be from the svn version.

Initially, I didn't like the idea of installing something from 4.0.0 myself (that's why I tried with kwin 3.5.8), but now I'm quite satisfied of this workaround. The only drawback, which I just discovered, is that shutting down kwin isn't the only action which makes configuration disappear. Another one is using the Special Application/Window settings menu entry.

As of this morning SVN kdelibs-r769067 and later for all SVN packages all the custom font settings are still lost- reverts to default on reboot. I too think I'll just wait for SVN fixes- I think mixing in 4.0 packages is probably asking for trouble, even if it does work.

Stefano Crocco- please keep us posted if you run into problems.

Thanks for catching that. I have been too busy/stressed as of late to follow KDE development. I will grab the latest 4.0 branch which should be close to the 4.0.1 release. :P I can't bother to pull off tags. :lol: The changelog looks very extensive.

There are also a couple other fixes that are not listed there, like a fix to the sandbox errors in branch, so 4.0.1 will play better with sandboxes. This was a bug I reported and it got fixed before the tag, so I am sure it's in there. :P They really can't list every fix in that log.

Am I the only one which can't make Get Hot New Stuff work (at least as far as new wallpapers are concerned)? If I press the "Get new wallpaper" button on the Configure Desktop dialog, a Get Hot New Stuff dialog open, displaying a list of the availlable wallpapers. Yet, only a few thumbnails are displayed. Which ones are displayed and which not seems to be completely random, and it doesn't seem to be a matter of time (I waited some minutes, and no new image appeared).

I must add that this is not a new issue, for me: it always worked this way with kde4, but I couldn't find any bug report about this.

Any thoughts?

On the "Get Hot New Stuff" problem, I would imagine it's just one of the many things not fixed/implemented yet.

BTW, any progress on the settings issue yet? Are we sure it's totally a kwin problem, or not? Seems like kde would have caught and fixed this by now. Wish I was more competent, and could help out with actually fixing these things. :(

I looked in http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdebase/workspace/systemsettings/categories/ and found some interesting items, but nothing obviously font related, unless I just missed it. Guess I'll try a new complete rebuild- this losing the font settings thing bothers me. :wink:

Has anyone tried working with that plasmoid ebuild on kde-look?

I just completed a complete svn rebuild, and I can confirm the panel is resizable like in kde3, and the font settings now survive a kde and X restart! :D SVN revision numbers are 769725 and higher.

It just gets better and better! :!:

EDIT: My font settings survived a reboot! :D

Hm, I'm still having some problems...
1. Does Kopete support irc yet again? What use flag is needed for it then?
2. It also seems like many of the shortcuts broke with one build for me. For example, ALT+F2 doesn't do anything or STRG+ALT+K doesn't switch my keyboard layout.
3. Also, my Konqueror is terrible slow on some web sites... the netgraph plasmoid shows that it wastes the most time on something other than fetching files (i.e. it's not my internet connection)
4. Probably not implemented yet, too: terminal emulator in konqueror doesn't do anything.

I had to comment out Kopete in the kdenetwork CMakeLists.txt file in order to compile kdenetwork. I'm wondering if I need a specific USE flag?

Also wondering about the optional packages emerge reports missing, and whether or not some of them might really be mandatory, as IIRC sometimes when a package fails it refers to an "optional" package. Can't think of an example right now.

Also, why would emerge keep saying I need taglib >1.4, but I have it installed? Is this an example of when you also need the taglib USE flag in order to get it recognized?

It would really be helpful to compile a master list of all these optional packages and needed USE flags for each kde svn package we are working with. Maybe the devs already have one they could post? I can't seem to locate some of these, but I'm gradually adding more of the optional stuff, as I see it in emerge output. For example, I just did :
Code:
emerge  lcms libkipi libkdcraw libzip libcaptury gphoto2 libexiv2

libexiv2 failed (no such ebuild, even though eix libexiv2 reports it's there) I do have exiv2 installed- is libexiv2in there, and maybe I need the USE flag?

Eix jabber (seemingly related to kopete) returns ten matches- anyone know which one is the optional package mentioned just before kdenetwork failed at kopete 83%? I'm thinking it might be this one:
Code:
 * net-im/jabberd2
     Available versions:  (~)2.1.19 (~)2.1.20 (~)2.1.21 {debug ipv6 ldap memdebug mysql pam pipe postgres sasl sqlite}
     Homepage:            http://jabberd2.xiaoka.com/
     Description:         Open Source Jabber Server

if eix reports there is one, either your portage or your eix cache is broken.
First do an "emerge --sync" and then "update-eix".

I also had this when I updated xine and then tried to update kdebase.
Reinstalling kdelibs solved it for me, too, perhaps it also works for you.

I have compiled kde4 using the kde4 howto. Everything compiled fine, but when I want to start kde4 the hdd icon in the splash screen is blinking and nothing else happens. KDE4 does not start.
Any idea what is wrong?

I think you mean the following:

Code:

*  media-gfx/exiv2
      Latest version available: 0.16
      Latest version installed: 0.16
      Size of files: 1,554 kB
      Homepage:      http://www.exiv2.org/
      Description:   EXIF and IPTC metadata C++ library and command line utility
      License:       GPL-2

*  media-libs/libkexiv2
      Latest version available: 0.1.6
      Latest version installed: 0.1.6
      Size of files: 418 kB
      Homepage:      http://www.kipi-plugins.org
      Description:   KDE Image Plugin Interface: an exiv2 library wrapper
      License:       GPL-2

note the "k" in libkexiv2 :D

Btw. Anybody any idea why my kopete-svn doesn't ask me for a password neither on ICQ nor Jabber ? Instead it tries to use kwallet and failes:
Code:

QObject::connect: Cannot connect QDBusErrorHelper::pendingCallError(QDBusError,QDBusMessage) to KWallet::Wallet::(null)

Is there a way to force kopete not to use kwallet ?

I'm sorry to report that the disappearing settings problem is not completely gone. While it's true that settings aren't erased on logout, they're still erased when you open the "special window settings" dialog, from the context menu obtained right-clicking on the window borders. I think (I'm not going to try it) that the bug can also happen changing the window specific settings from SystemSettings.

If you ever happen to need the Special Window Settings functionality, you can copy the .kdesvn/share/config/kdeglobalsrc file before launching the Special Window Settings dialog somewhere else. When you've closed the dialog, log out and restore the file. This should restore most, if not all, the lost settings. Maybe, you can do this without logging out, but I didn't try it.

drizzt,
Thanks! don't know how I missed that "k"! :oops:

On the kopete/kwallet thing, I looked in /usr/portage/distfiles/svn-src/KDE/kdenetwork/kdenetwork/kopete/CMakeLists.text to see if you could comment it out, but it wasn't there.

Looked for a kwallet.rc file, , with some sort of "exclude" line, but found none.

Maybe build kdenetwork with USE="-kwallet", if a kwallet USE flag exists? I can't find one anywhere.

EDIT: I guess if you wanted to get rid of kwallet altogether, you could try commenting out the line
Quote:
macro_optional_add_subdirectory(kwallet)
in /usr/portage/distfiles/svn-src/KDE/kdeutils/kdeutils/CMakeLists.txt

Kwallet has annoyed me for years, and i never use it anyway- maybe I'll try that myself. :wink:

I'm not sure whether this helps you or not, but I think you can disable kwallet from SystemSettings/Advanced/KDE Wallet/Wallet Preferences/Enable the KDE wallet subsystem

Shouldn't we add the openexr USE flag to kdelibs? I got a message on the emerge kdelibs check mentioning adding media-libs/openexr, so I emerged it, but it still wasn't recognized. I added the openexr USE flag to kdelibs in package.use, and then the emerge check detected openexr on my system.

IIRC, this happened with taglib on another package- forget which one.

Is it basically the rule when you emerge a package in the emerge check, but it still doesn't get detected by emerge, adding a USE flag is in order? Seems to work.

Thanks for reminding me- like in kde3- I forgot. :oops: I was going at it from the point of view of not even compiling kwallet.

I've been using kde4 SVN so much lately I've kind of lost touch with good old kde-3.5.8. :wink:

how can I make gtk-apps (Firefox) prettier? gtk-engine-qt seems to depend on kde4 (not svn). or should I let it merge kde4libs and stuff?
