Oh, for someone that asked about Qt 4.4: Right now, they know about the issues of 4.4 and KDE 4, but some of the Devs don't even have Qt 4.4 installed yet. :P So far it should be compilable against 4.3, but it looks like they are just going to start fixing things for 4.4. Like the white font issue. :P So, apparently they are getting somethings to compile with 4.4.

So, for now, stick with 4.3, but expect some whackiness soon. :P We need to watch closely now, because the time is coming for 4.4. :) So, monitor the svn, and look for comments like "Fix for Qt 4.4" or something like that, and when you see that, you will know it's time. At that point, KDE may or may not even compile at all, so we also need to keep track of revision numbers, so that when something is 4.4 fixed and doesn't compile with 4.3, we can checkout that revision or give new users of the overlay that revision number. Then, hopefully after a few weeks after that, the whole thing will compile against 4.4 ... okay, maybe a month or so it would take to fix all the little compile errors with 4.4. :P

Cheers.

PS, tomorrow I am going to London, so my projects will be on hold for a bit. Qt Copy should work fine and I will try to remotely update it when I can.

kde-svn is officially on qt4.4-p1 now. I use qt4.4-p1 for my own tasks (with prefix), but yesterday I've removed qt4.3.3 and was thinking I'll be able to build kde. But ebuilds doesn't allow to build against qt4.4 complaining about dbus and accessibility USE flags. Please, fix ebuilds so that they support qt4.4-p1!

qt-copy is a development snapshot, not tp1

That clears up things a bit, thanks. So as said above I must wait for qt-copy ebuilds in layman or at least qt-copy get 4.4... That is "oh, that ebuild system limits me!" thing =)

Anyone here having problems with kdebase? On svn 775265, 775282, and 775289 it errors out at 50%, on:
Code:
[ 50% Building CXX object workspace/kwin/effects/CMakeFiles/kcm_kwin4_effect_videorecord.dir/videorecord_config.o

make[1: *** [workspace/libs/plasma/CMakeFiles/plasma.dir/all Error 2

make[1: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

Linking CXX shared module ../../../lib/kcm_kwin4_effect_videorecord.so

[ 50% Built target kcm_kwin4_effect_videorecord

make: *** [all Error 2

Log directory for kdebase is /home/wrc/kdesvn/log/2008-02-15-03/kdebase
  Setting kdebase,#error-log-file = /home/wrc/kdesvn/log/2008-02-15-03/kdebase/build-1.log
Logfile for kdebase is build-1.log

        Unable to build kdebase!

This is on Arch Linux- I was planning my regular Gentoo svn full updates today, but before starting in on two Gentoo boxes, I wanted to ask first if any Gentoo svn users had run into this, and if so it might be worth waiting for a fix on svn. Checked at dirk dashboard, but they aren't up to these versions- they're currently at 755258.

A couple of quick questions:

  • does anybody know whether storing the completion method for krunner is implemented? It works for konqueror, but for krunner I have to switch to the one I want every time I log in
  • sould the flash player plugin work? I keep getting crash dialogs from nspluginviewer whenever I go to a site containing flash animations. I remember reading something about fixing bugs in it in the KDE commit digest, but for me it still doesn't work.

[07:51] <CIA-41> bibr * r775198 workspace/trunk/KDE/kdebase/workspace/libs/plasma/ (containment.cpp widgets/flash.cpp widgets/widget.cpp):
[07:51] <CIA-41> Introduce QGraphicsItem::CacheMode in place of Widget::CachePaintMode.
[07:51] <CIA-41> This move was planned from the beginning; Widget::CachePaintMode was a
[07:51] <CIA-41> backport of the same feature in Qt 4.4. OK'ed by aseigo after post on
[07:51] <CIA-41> panel-devel. I've left CachePaintMode in there (it simply redirects to
[07:51] <CIA-41> CacheMode); I don't know if it's OK to remove these APIs or not (and
[07:51] <CIA-41> it's not monday anyway).

I guess it's that one, tried to compile it with Qt 4.4?

I probably can compile kdebase against qt-4.4, but most other programs can only be compiled against qt-4.3.
This leads me right away to this questions:

    a) Where can I get qt-4.4 ?
    b) can it coexist with qt-3 / qt-4(.3) ?

Very interesting link about qt-4.4. Guess I'll try it on Arch first, and stop using their qt-4.3.3, and all their support deps. This might be simpler just to see if things build with qt-copy (trunk version) befor jumping into Gentoo overlays and ebuilds.

Since the kdesvn-build script install everything in the user's /home directory, I suppose it's equivalent to slotting all of kdesvn and qt + any deps.

I think I can boot to a terminal or Gnome, and just uncomment qt-copy and kdesupport in the .kdesvn-buildrc file, and do a complete rebuild in /home/wrc/kdesvn, and then it will reinstall to /home/wrc/kde.

At least that's my current theory. Only one way to find out.

so that's the reason kdebase keeps on failing at plasma for me

KDE trunk currently doesn't build with Qt-4..3.3 anymore. Qt-4..4_tp1 isn't really usable, and the live ebuilds don't work with it either, so currently you can NOT compile KDE trunk with the ebuilds.

Just to let everyone know that we're aware of the problem, and we're working on it, we just assumed we had some time to adjust, after reading
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.kde.devel.core/50654.
Note that we're also working on KDE 3.5.9 etc...

Ah ok thanks for the info.
This means that all using the trunk should stop compiling until qt-4.4 is usable...

So here are a few questions:

a) are there ebuilds for the svn-branch ?
b) is the branch version "nearer" to the trunk or to the 4.0.0 version ?

hope I don't annoy anybody with all my probably stupid questions....

Thanks for the good info. :)

Anyway, I'm giving kdesvn with qt-copy r775387 and kdesupport packages from trunk a try on my Arch installation with the kdesvn-build script- I'm half-way through compiling qt-copy now. Should know about some of the kdesvn packages later today. Maybe that will give us some ideas on how soon the change to 4.4 can be made. I don't really expect this try to succeed, but who knows, maybe I'll get lucky.

Guess I'll have to wait on the Gentoo overlay & ebuilds until more info is posted up here.

UPDATE: Well, qt-copy 775387 (qt-4.4.0 snapshot-20080213) built OK, then kdesupport r775417 built OK, but kdelibs 775420 errored out at 98% with this:

I just wanted to post this one result with qt-4.4- I won't post any more from Arch Linux- just thought this one time might be interesting for us Gentoo users wanting to build with qt-4.4 ASAP.

I was hoping to get through kdelibs, kdepimlibs, and kdebase with qt-4.4.0, but I guess that's not currently possible, at least for me.

Lucky you, with fresh qt-copy under Gentoo I'm stuck at 18% with kdelibs :) Something phonon-related, not sure what exactly the problem is.

Seems to me that we should override kde4-base.eclass from portage, because it knows nothing about modular Qt-4.4 USE flags.

My build bails out at the same place :D

EDIT: fixed it with some more changes to the qt-core ebuild :)

The other thing that I've noticed is that http://developer.kde.org/~dirk/dashboard/ seemingly is not using new qt-copy yet. Hope this will be changed soon.

CooSee,
Good news. 8) However, some questions:

!. Do you mean all kde-svn packages are building, or which ones?
2. How are you implementing the use of qt-copy (overlay or portage), and is it from trunk?
3. Did you remove qt-4.3.3, and/or is qt-copy slotted?

fidc2,
What are your edits to the qt-core ebuild?

Judging from my failed Arch qt-copy 4.4 experience, I'm kind of reluctant to try updating my currently somewhat decently working kdesvn installs on my Gentoo boxes (r774570-r774690. With these, even kdepim compiled and kmail works.

Does somebody know when normale KDE apps like k3b will be supported?
At the moment I still need 3.5.*
Or is it just a matter of the ebuild?

AFAIK there's an experimental version of k3b for use with KDE4. So in case of k3b this is the matter of ebuild. Some other applications may not have ports to KDE4 still.

I used the tp1 ebuilds to make snapshot ebuilds with qt-copy patches and added some hacks and fixes to them to make kde compile.
