I'm sure I'm not the only one who got this. Last time my system hanged while I emerge -u world. Now whenver I want to emerge anything, I got:

>>> Merging dev-lang/python-2.2.1-r1 to /
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 1262, in ?
mydepgraph.merge(mydepgraph.altlist())

retval=portage.doebuild(y,"merge",myroot,edebug)
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 1136, in doebuild
return merge(settings["CATEGORY"],settings["PF"],settings["D"],settings["BUILDDIR"]+"/build-info",myroot,myebuild=settings["EBUILD"])

mylink.merge(pkgloc,infloc,myroot,myebuild)
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 3298, in merge
self.treewalk(mergeroot,myroot,inforoot,myebuild)
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 2974, in treewalk
packagecounter=long(globalcounterfile.readline())
ValueError: invalid literal for long():

Anyone has a solution to this problem. I really don't want to reinstall.

Thank you very much
Alan

Have you done "emerge --clean rsync" ? It'll blow away your portage tree and replace it with the one on the rsync mirror.

Good luck.
