how does everyone feel about gnome2?
here are my thoughts.
it has no solid configuration system, everything is strewn about and not veryintuitive.
it has very liittle configurability, i can't configure half the stuff i could in gnome1.4
i can't do anything to that damned "mac" bar at the top of the screen except delete it
where did my transparent panels go??
--im really not impressed, though nautilus is quite faster and gnome2 does load faster that 1.4 did. |

i agree with you on this one.
i can hardly stand kde, as it is such a clunker, but gnome2 seems almost not finished.
on the other hand, nautilus 2 is great! |

here's an interesting thing for ya - log into a non-gnome desktop
and run gnome-control-center
It DOESNT load in Nautilus and is actually usable
just gotta work out how to do that with nautilus running.
As for GNOME2 - it's not finished - 2.0.1 should be a lot better,
but the control center needs some re-thinking
Anyone wanna go file a feature-request, maybe i'll do it tomo
And dont forget gconf-editor - it's you key to configuration _________________ Mark Finlay - Gnome Hacker of Sorts

how about :
emerge gnome
emerge unmerge gnome
emerge gnome-1.4
you get all the new GTK+ librairies and you have the old ones, but you still get to run gnome 1.4 AND the new nautilus sticks around. im running this now, it works well. |

I think he has still the old controll center installed, you can only change gnome 1.4 settings there.
the simplifcation was intentional, because a huge configuration tree a la gnome-cc or kdecontroll center scares the hell of most users (ok, maybe gentoo users are not included )
If you want to customize start the configutration edit (gconf-editor) under sytem tools, with that you have total controll over the things happening in gnome 2 (its even scriptable ! very cool !) |

I have a few problems too, which I posted in another thread but will add here as well.
1. You can't tidy your icons on the desktop. I don't want to align them by name on the left; I want to be able to put them where I want and then tell them to line up nicely. Icons in the nautilus folder view are aligned, so obviously they have the code to do it. Why can't they extend that to the desktop?
2. Option to mail files from the context menu. KDE has this (I believe anyway...can anyone back me up?). It would be nice to be able to set Gnome's default mail handler (i.e. Evolution for me) and have it automatically create a message with the file as an attachment.
3. Defining what programs open certain types of files. I tried every possible combination of default viewers for .c files but it always just shows me the source in the nautilus window.
I still love Gnome though. Hopefully these will be addressed in 2.1. |

Uhm I know this topic is old, but I just found it by accident and want to set a few things straight:
Using the control-center shell (no Nautilus):
gnome-control-center --use-shell (you can make a shortcut to this if you want to). It's meant for users who don't want to install Nautilus for whatever reason.
Option to mail files: You could do a simple Nautilus script for this I guess. Yes, there is even already one (two actually), look here:
