If grub loads and runs from (HD0,0)
and (HD0) is actually /dev/sda1
and grub then announces that
it cannot locate /dev/sda... whatever!!!!
then grub truly sucks! _________________ Fatty Pierre

What is your menu.lst file? It could be more of a SCSI iisue than a GRUB issue. Do you have /dev/sd* entries? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

First let me make clear that all oif this frustration is now in the past tense.
I have moved on, sadly leaving gentoo behind while these irritations are resolved.
My menu read as follows...
------ start paste -----
default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title=Gentoo
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/sda3
------ end paste --------
There was only the one hdd - /dev/sda
This was a RAID 0 array on an aging dpt controller that seemed to be properly understood after the driver identity was fixed in the 1.2 release.
Clearly it *was* fixed otherwise GRUB wouldn't find (hd0,0) _________________ Fatty Pierre

Posting messages with inflammatory subject lines is one sure way to get a thread locked.
