I installed gentoo without changing anything because I thought that was best. What tweaks and things should or can I do to make my system build better? I will install again if I must. |

I first did the emerge system and emerge gnome with "standard" USE flags. After that I studied the USE flags guide (see www.gentoo.org on the left somewhere) and decided which flags to use. As I don't use KDE for instance, I did -kde, etc... It all boils down to what kind of proc you have, if you want to use X and which windowmanager etc.... you have to decide for yourself basically. |

Also u might want to chage the CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS in /etc/make.conf At the least try -march=something for ur processor, or i686 for Pentium Pro/Pentium II/Pentium III+/Pentium 4/Athlon). I just use athlon-tbird. |

Pentium Pro is i686?
I have an Old PPro 180 at home running OpenBSD. i was contemplating installing gentto but I thought I might lose some performace, but if I can install i686 maybe it won't be too bad. |
