Pop3 and keep on server settings. Can it still be unread?

I use courier-imap on my server, and mostly use imap. But I want to setup a device to read mail using pop3. The only problem is even if I choose to keep mail on server with pop3, the messages are marked as read. I want them to stay unread unless opened using the imapd. Does anyone know if this can be done?

It's by design. I can't see any normal way around it.
