It is 8.452.
I posted to the old bug 777 (which belongs to an older version), because it's exactly the same problem. I make a mistake in my posting, which I have now corrected.
Sorry.

EDIT:
There are many other with the same problem: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=941

Hi,
I just installed the version from portage today and I don't see much of a difference. I was really hoping that I would finally be able to use XV and OpenGL with AIGLX but this version still doesn't allow it - everything keeps flickering. Same with xorg-serve-1.4 - seems like I will have to wait longer to get AIGLX working with it. At least they haven't screwed up anything this time (like the widescreen bug in 7.12).
Cheers,

Wojtek

I just got around to testing the new driver, and I must say I haven't seen an Ati-Driver release this BAD in quite a while (i've been using them on my laptop for ~4 years now). Normally releases just break XV and/or OpenGL in one way or another requiring some hack to get it to sort-of work again. This time though the whole machine locks up the moment X starts, leaving only sysReq-B to reboot :-(
I would recommend skipping this release and/or buying an NVidia card instead (I did for my new pc!)

Anyone using this with 2.6.24 kernels? Doesnt seem to want to compile against the latest zen-sources

Same outcome here.

Heck! I don't understand anything to their numbering scheme! ati-drivers-4.452 are in fact downloading package 8_01... Go figure... <sarcasm>Probably the next driver version will be 195.10 and the following one 8.985...</sarcasm>

Actually they have... I suffer from what is listed in the Known Issues section as: "A black screen may be observed on some hardware when switching to the console or leaving the X window system when a Vesa framebuffer console driver is used." This doesn't happen with 8.433. So... downgrading again, just like last month. :(

On radeon X200 i was able to run compiz but it wasn't running smoothly ;/ Since ati-drivers 8.42.3 i am not able to smoothly play movies in mplayer (every 5 seconds the movie stops for a 0,1 sec. and plays again).I downgrade my drivers to ati-drivers-8.40.4. Does any of you have the same issue with mplayer?

I'm also not having any luck.

Xorg 1.4, X800XL (R430 chipset) and 2.6.24 kernel.

8.433 release works. 8.443 and 8.452 both lock up the computer hard when X starts. I get about a second with a functioning mouse pointer and then the pointer freezes and it's all she wrote. X log doesn't show anything going wrong. It just stops logging when it freezes.

Sigh. Another entry in package.mask.

ati-drivers is the king of regressions. Every release either fixes a bug or introduces a bug (or both). one in three releases freezes the display, forcing a hard reboot. It is by far the most unreliable piece of code on my box. I can understand that new releases of the kernel break the interface and they have to fix the driver. So I could understand minor bugs creeping in because of this. But to announce releases that routinely hard lock the system? You would think they could figure that out.

Add that they're still furbishing the "BUG: sleeping function called within illegal context"... Still present, maybe since the very first versions...

you should all just switch over to radeonhd.... they should have 3d support soon

Meh, they're taking their time. They committed XAA and EXA today, but those are actually slower than ShadowFB when Composite is enabled due to a lack of Render support card-side. I'm personally waiting for the 3D shader docs sometime in the next two weeks so textured video (VLC, mplayer, ZSNES) can be accelerated.

Hi, since several ati-drivers releases OpenGL does not work anymore.
You can see a screenshot of glxgears here. Every OpenGL context looks like that.

According the the Think-Wiki, FireGL support is back since 7.12, so it should work in 8.01 (8.452), too. (correct?)

Specs:
* Thinkpad T41p
* ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 (128 MB)
* kernel gentoo-sources 2.6.24
* tested xorg-servers 1.3, 1.4 and 1.4.0.90
* loaded kernel modules: fglrx, intel_agp, agpgart
* mounted tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)

I've already tried lots of different options. Unfortunately nothing helps. The broken drivers seems like a never-ending story, but I'm trying it from time to time anyway :)

Here is my output of xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, dmesg, fglrxinfo, glxinfo
Is any important information missing?

eselect opengl list shows that ati is used.

Good advice! Thanks, I'll check that ASAP and post my comments... (For now I'm still not using 3D as it's my laptop for work and I've got no 3D stuff so it shouldn't be worse than before ;-))

May I safely use the one from portage or do you think it's best to use the one from CVS?

I've solve my issue with broken ATI-drivers. The solution is described here.

In short, ATI says:
Code:
Symptoms:
On workstation hardware 3D applications will be corrupted if the screen width is not an integer multiple of 64 pixels, for example with a 1680x1050 wide screen display.
Solution:
Currently there is no solution.

ATI Engineering has been advised of this issue and is investigating. Any updates will be published when they become available.
To workaround the issue do the following:
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf as root user. Locate the Section "Screen" with the Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]". Locate the SubSection "Display" inside this Screen section. Add the following line  inside this "Display" subsection:
Virtual   <width> <height>
where <width> is the width of your screen in pixels rounded up to the next multiple of 64 and <height> is the height of your screen in pixels. For example if you are using a 1680x1050 display you would add this line:
Virtual  1728 1050

I've tested the Antialiasing fix only right now. This works already :)

Goodness! I can at last now use transparency et al. with my favorite desktop 8O ! This is a freaking good driver! Thanks a bunch, man!

My observations:
  • I just had to change the driver option in my xorg.conf from fglrx to radeonhd et voilà!
  • Fonts were larger with ATI driver but I expect this is ATI's way to see fonts. I have had to switch from 8pt fonts to 10pts fonts, which KDE defaults to in fact.
  • Transparency at last just *works*! I can finally use KDE transparency/shadows!
  • radeonhd uses XAA for acceleration, which currently gives better results than EXA.
Conclusion: plain satisfaction At last a driver that just works. I don't care 3D performance right now. But I'm looking forward to checking that  !

Agreed, you should all drop fglrx for radeonhd. It's worth waiting for the rest!

EDIT: ati-drivers-* is now history...
Code:
emerge -avqC ati-drivers

Does it support all the same devices that fglrx does? Like my X1300? :)

Maybe this is the wrong thread to discuss radeonhd, but VinzC, I have tried radeaonhd and the graphics is garbled (some columns are repeated). As I have the same card as you do, I am surprised it seems to work for you. Care to post your xorg.conf, let me know which version you using (or git), and if xrandr with dual monitors works?

Thanks!

Hi!

Thank you dojo for the information about disablind dri. That did help, though I need DRI. But, I came here to tell you this, though it is kind of semi-official:

ATI admits that the AGP-versions of HD-series do not work under linux (See bridgman's comment along the page). We just need to wait for the next version, to see if they really are going to make it official and update the release notes. But hoping for the support in the next release is way too optimistic, I guess :D

Correcting myself: the comment in the link above only refres to HD2xxx (not the whole HD-series). So, HD3xxx should (might?) work, even the AGP-versions - if they exist.
