I'm trying to setup a shared folder so all users can make changes to files and I think I have a permissions problem with NFS.

I have installed nfs-utils on both the server and the client

I have configured the exports file on the server
I have managed to mount the folder from the client

I can ls the folder and read the files but I'm unable to edit or create new ones.

After googling forums upon forums it appears that my uid's are different. On the server it is 1010 and on the client it is 1035. Some sites have suggested changing my uid to 1010 and this will solve the problem but then how would my colleague edit files as obviously there uid will be different to mine?

Is there a way to create a shared group??

hi,

this is a problem with nfs. you should set up NIS, that cares about the UIDs.
a different way (okay, i know it is some kind of crazy, but it just works quite well) is to utilize samba for that.
there you have the ability to connect with a explicit username.
you can also take a look at AFS and CODA. i am not sure what NFSv4 brings with it's security features.

It did look like NFS was going to be a problem - I cant start changing uids as these are live web servers are you saying that samba is the way forward for folder sharing with many users on linux??
