When one adds a user using useradd, the command consults /etc/login.defs for a range of UIDs. This is usually 1000 to 60,000, but varies from distro to distro. When apt-get adds a user, like say when you installed postfix, it starts from a different number. In Ubuntu 7.04's case, this is 100. Does anyone know what file governs this? I need to change it.
