|
|
Hello all.
I'm installing a second hard drive (/dev/hdb) on one Ultra 5.
The new hard drive is Western Digital WD800BB (80Gb), but the system detects only 32Gb.
The HD jumper is set to SLAVE and is correct.
The first HD (/dev/hda connected at the same cable) is Western Digital WD1600AVBB (160Gb) and is the master.
I remember that i had no problems installing and configuring the first drive.
My problem is that the system doesn't detect more than 16 heads for the second drive.
When i created the Sun Disklabel for the 80Gb HD, the geometry that i selected (manually) is 9728/255/63 , but the system still recognizes 65535/16/63.
The only differences between two HDs is their capacity and Standards ATA/ATAPI Supported.
The first HD supports 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and the second supports 1,2,3,4,5,6
I don't think this could be the problem, because i have another Ultra5 with a Seagate ST380011A (80Gb) and supports only 1,2,3,4,5,6 but the system detects 255 heads for it and works ok.
Any ideas on how to get the correct geometry for the WD800BB ?

Sorry to ask a dumb question... but have you by any chance configured the jumpers on your HD with the "32GB clip"? Make sure this is not the case. |

I thought that jumpers could be the problem.
I checked it, and found that Master disk had no jumpers. Slave disk jumper setting was correct.
I added a jumper to Master disk like diagram found on it.
To show you how are the jumpers settings, check it on Dell's support page:
http://support2.jp.dell.com/docs/storage/p58403/jumpers.htm
Right now, master disk (WD1600AVBB) has the jumper at the middle (DUAL MASTER) (option 2 of diagram) and slave disk (WD800BB) has the jumper one position right from the middle (DUAL SLAVE) (option 3 of diagram).
The system started ok, but the problem with slave disk remains.
Nothing solved after the changes. Still recognizes 65535/16/63 for WD800BB.
Thanks. _________________ Charly Tango
