I agree that for a long time there were no voices from developers if 4.1 will be included in main tree and when (when ready=/). But KDE is only one case and Gentoo information/documentation (official and unofficial via wiki) is still far superior to ones that other distros have.

Also my previous post might be a bit to harsh, as I myself use KDE from overlay, and it is not the only set of applications that I use every day that come from overlay, and in fact overlays support is not so bad, problems with some overlays are allowed on bugzilla, you can send an email directly do overlay maintainers and personally I didn't have any major issues regarding support for overlays.

You say that KDE is part of your core system, and KDE is in the main tree. KDE 4.1 is NOT considered stable, or complete. Only version 4.2 will be complete. In fact you want unstable software in main tree - of course there is testing branch for it, but it is up to developers to decide if they want to include KDE in main tree at all.

In my opinion KDE 4 releases should have the same dignity as the 3.x series had. They may, as it often happened with KDE 3, never make it to the stable branch. But they definitely should enter the unstable tree or at least hard masked tree, so that users can *choose* what software to use, and what is good for them. And we are not speaking about "live svn ebuilds": this is "upstream-released software", so it should be considered "upstream stable".

But, leaving this aside: neither the 3.5.10 release is in the tree. That one was released over 2 weeks ago. So this may not be an issue about "stability" or "completeness": kde's ebuilds used to be in the tree even BEFORE the official release (even before the *tagging*, sometimes!).

KDE 4.0 was marked as unstable by it's developers. Don't get me wrong, I too think that both 3 and 4 series should be available. I hope that this delays come from such factors as:
- KDE 4.1 ebuilds probably have to be written from scratch
- developer power must be split to 3.10 and 4.1 so both will take more time

Sync the overlay? My ebuild seems good, but I don't know if I have a snapshot from before or after yours. You can also edit the ebuild and remove '[X]'.

As I see then next post I'll clarify that I have kdesvn overlay.

Ok obviously you are using some overlay, isn`t it much more convenient to ask questions on it`s thread.I think you`ll have much bigger chance for help than here

So there's an overlay specific thread. Thanks, I will try that! :)

Nope, that's the one with Paludis specific ebuilds ( ). Here's the thread for kdesvn-portage: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-694231.html

Few days no improvement :?

Code:
The official KDE 4.1 ebuilds appear to be approximately 94.24% done, of which 93.13% have 4.1.1 ebuilds.

A couple of posts appeared, a few days ago, on Planet KDE that shed some light on the reasons for the delay in the inclusion of KDE 4.1 in portage. You can read them here and here.

As you were answered - ^^ - this is the other (the evil one) overlay (genkdesvn) for paludis users (maintained by former KDE Gentoo maintainter - philantrop.. what a shame)

Wait a minute, so this is the official thread for official KDE4 testing overlay or KDE4 in portage? (I could swear I though this is kdesvn-portage thread) - this is way too confusing, I'm going to contact moderators to do sth about it.

Edit: I PM-ed one of moderators and proposed my idea how to clarify this mess.

No. kdesvn-portage is not official.

Earlier in this thread I provided a link to the KDE4 gentoo-wiki which tells you about overlays compatible with Portage:
genstorm wrote:
Voila, here it is, your guide to KDE4 on Gentoo: http://gentoo-wiki.com/KDE4

There is kde-testing, which is official with its ebuilds being submitted to Portage some time in the future.
There is kdesvn-portage, which is unofficial and provides additional ebuilds for the current KDE-4.2 development branch (live SVN and 'stable' snapshots). support thread.
There is kde, which is available only to Paludis users. support thread.

Don't know if this is the place to post it but I did

Code:

layman -a kde-testing

unmasked all teh packages and when I do

Code:

emerge -pv kde-meta

I get the following blocks:

[blocks B ] x11-libs/qt-core (is blocking x11-libs/qt-4.3.3)
[blocks B ] <=x11-libs/qt-4.4.0_alpha:4 (is blocking x11-libs/qt-dbus-4.4.1, x11-libs/qt-script-4.4.1, x11-libs/qt-core-4.4.1-r1, x11-libs/qt-gui-4.4.1, x11-libs/qt-sql-4.4.1, x11-libs/qt-qt3support-4.4.1, x11-libs/qt-test-4.4.1, x11-libs/qt-svg-4.4.1, x11-libs/qt-opengl-4.4.1, x11-libs/qt-webkit-4.4.1)

Any ideas how to fix them?

Code:
equery list x11-libs/qt | grep 4\.

Unmerge found qt-4 packages.

After that, try again:
Code:
emerge -pv kde-meta

If something below qt-4.4.0 still gets pulled in,
Code:
echo "<x11-libs/qt-4.4" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

Does anyone know if the proxy issue has been fixed in 4.1?

And what was this issue? I've used proxy with KDE 4.1.0 and it worked.

In 4.0.x proxy support was totally b0rked. Konqueror and native KDE apps couldn't access the internet if you were behind a proxy, although Firefox/Opera/Whatever could if you manually specified the settings. Good to know it's fixed.

Yeah, it works, but you can't set proxy for individual applications, only global configuration.
