and after re-emerging it...it works like a champ. However, i'm still getting the same problem on redhat 6.2...if anyone has any ideas about that, let me know

If you're compiling the ssh package from source - enable the md5 passwords (as argument on ./configure).
Make sure you read the /usr/local/etc/sshd_config (or whatever your path is) and check for the line "AllowUser blahblah"
If you have such line, make sure your username is there. If you don't, try editing the file and put in the end "AllowUsers yourusername"
That's it.
