Virtual mail postgresql - how to crypt?

I have done some searching and not found an obvious answer.

The EMail: A Complete Virtual System HOWTO describes generating a password using the crypt() function.

I assume this is the password generated when using passwd for a local user. How do you call this function for a password string that is not for a local user?

Am I missing a package or is there a simple way to wrap this into a script?
