I have an ASUS P5E-VM HDMI and I just can't slow the fan down. It has a 3pin connector to the motherboard, and I can get information from it, but other than that it seems to spin constantly at 1960. I don't seen anything in the bios other than running it at performance/silent/nothing none of which seem to change it from it spinning at a constant ~1950 constantly. I probably don't have something switched on; aren't running the right thing, but I'm lost.
I got lm-sensors working and it gives this output.

You have to enable Q-Fan in the BIOS first. _________________ Gentoo is the stick-shift of Linux.
You work it manually, it has somewhat better performance, but it's really for the fun of it. |

but be careful, if the rpms drop too low it might signal a "dead fan" alarm.

I'm Pretty sure I have Q-Fan switched on in the BIOS

I don't know whether its relevent but pwmconfig finds 3 PWM controllers but 4 fans

Just to clarify, the two means of controlling your fan speed are- Q-fan .. native to ASUS motherboards
(completely automatic control of CPU + case fans handled by BIOS)
- fancontrol
(completely manual control of CPU + case fans)
If you elect to use q-fan, you still can over-ride it with manual control using fancontrol (I've tested it)
Since your fan still holds at 1960 RPM, try switching to other the 3-pin outlets on your motherboard:
Why? ...because maybe not all of the controllers work
My ASUS motherboard is a little strange (M2NBP-VM) and it cannot control one of its case fans
Of the two 3-pin case fan outlets, only one pwm controller actually works.
The other controller is detected but cannot affect the fan speed in any way.

| That tells me that the motherboard was not designed to control all the case fan speeds.
I can't say for sure since I don't have your exact motherboard model.
EDIT: I don't think controlling case fan speed is particularly beneficial though...unless your sucking air in for a silent heatsink
Most noise, imho, typically comes from the CPU fan and, sometimes, the power supply fan

You where right. I swapped the 3-pin for a 4-pin in the end, but my "bought since" 3-pin case fan works. Its a little confusing. I have my motherboard controlling my fans for now, but I suspect I will use fancontrol which does override the q-fan . I don't really understand the scripting yet, as It doesn't seem to have much AI to it which seems what it obviously needs. I suspect I will be back on here after I get something better than conky. |

Would you mind giving a quick review of the board, tuppe? Do the video and audio both work through hdmi in Gentoo? I'm considering buying it for an htpc setup. _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |

I can actually tell you very little about the HDMI. I tried using the DVI to HDMI converter which seemed fine in console, but when I start X my monitor goes into standby. There is a discussion for the ATX version of this motherboard in the Xorg forums which posts a *workaround* but not a fix for this problem, needless to say I'm running from the analogue for now. The latest drivers do not fix the problems and are so buggy for me I have reverted to stable Xorg ones.
Overall the x3500 has very little information about speed, but I gambled that it was enough for the the games offered on Linux of the Quake3D generation esp after such a big step up with the processor, but even though its more feature complete(working eye-candy) than my X800. I am back playing these games in a window on my 1600x1200 monitor. I can't compare the drivers to that of XP becuase I haven't got it, but I suspect the story is the same. The bottom line is I bought a half height case because of my computer location...and really needed more graphics grunt than this motherboard can offer. I bought now to sell my old computer on ebay, at Christmas where I thought I would get a better price. I should personally waited until the next generation of CPU's from intel came out...and the chipset with the alleged 4X speed grunt. I suspect I will replace this with one of those then it comes out...Oh and compiz loses its boarders I suspect you will see a post by me on that later.
The reality is though other than the graphics regression everything else is pleasant surprises. ACHI worked out of the box...and I'd never heard of it. I've never had a motherboard with so much stuff on thats so easy to get to. Even with a massive fan covering most of the board. I got it for the 8GB/Quad-core for Gentoo and in that department its a dream. Other than graphics being lack-luster I have yet to find something that doesn't work...that wasn't my fault.
...but yeah the bottom line is for what I wanted...I jumped too soon. I suspect this motherboard will go to a friend/family member when the ICH10 comes out. |

I found this thread in the Ubuntu forums, and hdmi video apparently works out of the box with gutsy but not with the dvi adapter. Audio isn't working over hdmi either. Asus did a decent job helping with drivers for their M2N32-SLI Deluxe (I built a machine for my neices with that board) so hopefully these issues will be resolved in the near future. _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |
