|

Hi,
For those few times that I need Windows to run certain programs, is it possible to have a Windows virtual machine on my box that I can install programs onto and keep them installed on, rather than having to dualboot and dedicate a partition to Windows?

| Sure. Most visualization software can have linux act as the host. VMware, virtualbox, xen, etc. |

Absolutely. I use KVM with an XP Pro SP2 install for some VS2005 work (class stuff) and it installs/runs just fine. _________________ ~~ Peter: GNU/Linux geek, caffeine addict, and Free Software advocate.

OK, so since it's possible, I'd like to do that. Next question would be, what's a good, free VM piece of software that can run on Gentoo+fluxbox?
I am trying, at least right now, to be as far away from gnome or KDE as possible (I use gnome for Ubuntu, but as nice out-of-the-box as it is, I wanted to try minimalist fluxbox for my gentoo install - KDE I just avoid like the plague; I don't want the *excessive* bloat.) |

Alternatively, I've heard good things about VirtualBox, but have never used it myself. _________________ ~~ Peter: GNU/Linux geek, caffeine addict, and Free Software advocate.

Alright. Thanks. I'll check out VirtualBox, only because I know that name. |

Problem is, KVM can only run when your processor has virtualization support. One of the things I always liked about Linux is that I never really felt like my 1,7 Pentium Mobile wasn't good enough for the job, so I don't really feel like upgrading. Also, Virtualbox is QT. Nuffsaid for a lot of linux users.
I may have used my own experiences on the matter in the above text, but personally I don't see any competition for VMWare right now. |

| You've said "nuff said for most linux users".... well, I'm a noob, so I don't know too too much about QT besides the few times I've been it during use flags and stuff. Is QT bad/good? Should I stick with VirtualBox? |

I think in Gentoo the binary is not called qemu-kvm though. _________________

I use virtual box and love it. Qt is the GUI toolkit used by KDE, just as GTK+ is the toolkit used by GNOME. I don't believe VirtualBox has any KDE dependencies but it does require QT. It fits in very well with KDE but it'll work just fine in fluxbox. I say go for it, it's the best Free Software VM solution at the moment. _________________ Joe Mulloy

Some people like to stick to myths without having any factual basis. There's nothing wrong with Qt. It's a solid library, very fast, good API, well-documented. So is GTK+. Both have their plusses and minuses. Anybody who refuses to use a program because it requires Qt or GTK+ is either using a 386, or is an idiot (or possibly both if they are still trying to use 386s in this day an age ). |

| OK, so I've got it, but when I get it all set up, put in my laptop's XP disk, and run the machine, the install phase gives me an error saying that "the model is not supported". Any ideas how to fix this? |

Yeah, it won't work. You see Microsoft hates freedom and wants you to pay through the nose. OEM discs aren't the same as the retail discs. They FORCE the OEM's to make custom discs that only work on their machines. The virtual machine does not look like a/an (insert OEM name) so you can't install it. You need a separate product key. Only recently did I start using XP in a VM and that's only because I was able to get a free copy through my university's Academic MSDN program. Even though it still on the same physical hardware Microsoft want you to pay. You have two options, break the Copy Protection by getting a Corprate version and thus become a "Pirate" in order to do what fair use says you should be able to do or pay for the privilege. Your choice. You can thank Microsoft. _________________ Joe Mulloy

Hawt. Looks like I'll have to do some hunting, or ask a friend in hopes that he has a cracked disk or something with him. Damn. I guess that ends my fun with VM for now. |
