Hello,

Basically, I like vlc's menu support, but mplayer is the only player where I see MORE than a black screen while compiz is running. is there any fix for vlc? I know that if I switch the driver in totem (I don't know how to do it in vlc) then playback is very slow. I.e. if I pick no xv as the driver, you can't watch the movie becauae it is so choppy.

Are you using compiz or compiz-fusion?
VLC is working here in compiz-fusion.
Make sure you have wxwindows support if you enable skins in VLC
Code:
[I] media-video/vlc
Installed versions:  0.9.0_alpha20071022(23:26:25 12/04/07)(X a52 alsa avahi cdda cddb dbus directfb dts dvd esd fbcon ffmpeg flac gnome hal jack libnotify mp3 mpeg musepack ncurses nsplugin ogg opengl oss png rtsp sdl sdl-image skins svg truetype twolame upnp vorbis wxwindows x264 xml xosd xv -3dfx -aalib -altivec -arts -bidi -cdio -daap -dc1394 -debug -dvb -ggi -gnutls -httpd -id3tag -libcaca -libgcrypt -lirc -live -lua -matroska -modplug -musicbrainz -optimisememory -pvr -samba -seamonkey -shout -speex -stream -svga -taglib -theora -v4l -v4l2 -vcd -vcdx -vlm -win32codecs -xinerama -xulrunner)

Still a problem?

Try this:

Worked for me.
