I have already revdep-rebuild -X too

Also tried emerge --sync, emerge -avUDN world.

If you have the same problem as I did, its a java problem. Check out my thread.

If its not java, we'll need more information about your system: emerge --info is a good start.

A segfault is not much to go on.

Forgive me for asking these questions but all I know about is the Java stuff.

What is the output of:

Code:
java-config-1 -L

and
Code:
java-config-2 -L

(I'd show you what its supposed to look like but I don't have access to my laptop right now.)

Are you running compiz? In other words if you do this:

Code:
emerge -pv libX11

Does it look like this:

Code:
emerge -pv libX11

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] x11-libs/libX11-1.1.2-r1  USE="xcb -debug -ipv6" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

If it does you need to add this to /etc/portage/package.use:

Code:
x11-libs/libX11 -ucb

and re-emerge it.

Other ideas. When you run the bin version you need to have 32 bit emulation enabled in the kernel, do you?
(I'm not sure about the compiled version)

Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
grep -i emul .config
...
CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION=y
...

Thanks for replies ...

Could this be some font issue...? I have posted a link in my first post in this topic regarding original issue of apache..someone suggested some commands and then I am sure openoffice 2.3 messed up. It was working fine before that

Try downgrading to the last version that worked. If it still works then I recommend reporting a bug to Gentoo and open-office. (Gentoo so they are aware that someone is having a problem and open office so they could try and fix it)

Firstly, I'd recommend avoiding compiling openoffice (so to stick with openoffice-bin) because rumor has it that the regular open office doesn't work well with 64-bit processors yet (I mean, you can try and see how it works, but I'd recommend not using it for that reason (at least until it isn't masked anymore). Secondly, are you in KDE or Gnome? If you are in KDE, disable the gnome USE flag and if you are in gnome, try running:

Code:
locate libgnomebreakpad.so

To see where that file is located. That first error looks like you may not have the 32-bit version of that installed on your machine (if you even can have it on your machine) As the segfault has remained the same, though, it is likely unrelated.

Check your package.keywords file and see if you can find if/where you have put openoffice-bin (or open office for that matter) and try removing it. That may help with the downgrade.

java looks good, just so you know. This error is more to go on.

I'm running openoffice compiled on x86_64 and it works fine for me. I only use the "writer" portion though so that may not mean much.

Try this. I don't use gnome so I can't do this on my machines but it should work.

(note: equery is part of gentoolkit, emerge it if you haven't already)

Code:
equery belongs libgnomebreakpad.so

This should reply with the package that contains that file.

Then emerge the package that contains that file. My guess is some dependency got broken that revdep-rebuild is not picking up on.

Re-emerging that won't help, as it's only going to build a 64-bit program. openoffice-bin is a 32-bit program (If you don't believe me, check the directory it's reading Open Office from:

Code:
/usr/lib32/openoffice/program/soffice

Anyway, the reason this error probably didn't show up with non-binary version of open office is because the 64-bit version was able to use the 64-bit library. To me, this also indicates that your main problem is not related to this error. I'm not in front of my gentoo machine right now, but could you check and see if either open office package has a debug flag? (I'm pretty certain that the binary doesn't, but the debug info could prove helpful at this point)

openoffice does have 'debug' flag. I tried to use but then when I emerge openoffice it fails giving some error

I will try again and give you errror in 2/3 hours lol ! I am starting emerge with debug flag now..

one more question

Is it okay to keep USE flags or should I remove any , I am using gnome and cups for printing , btw sound never worked in my system , don;t know if gstreamer is required at all

emerge -av openoffice

Since you have sound disabled, I imagine gstreamer would make sense to disable as well. Also, you might want the java enabled as well (I didn't read extensively through it, but I noticed that some of your earlier problems were java related? So you might already have an answer for that one)

**Update**
Of course I say this after you've already started the compilation, so just food for thought, I suppose :-)

Thanks anyways...

Actually i had tried using java as USE option but that did not make any difference

I can try again,
can I stop and remerge with -N option in emerge

No Change, after emerging again, the splash screen is still the first and last thing I see when I try ooffice or any of Open office commands.

Surprisingly,

I tried vncserver in my account and accessed it using vncviewer from other machine and tried ooffice, it opens there and at least does not get stuck at splash screen.
I could not see any option appeared when I clicked on top Menu options like File...etc, I tried keyboard input CTR L F-O and it popped with a directory choosing option but the menus still don't appear when I click by mouse on File or other titles.

The problem of open office still remains on locally executed open office..Please help

To me that might suggest that there is a problem with your (presumably) xorg or gnome setup. For the life of me, though, I really couldn't tell what would be causing it. It may be time to file a bug if thats the case

:D Today I upgraded to kernel 2.6.23-gentoo-r3, x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU

While compiling I did something wrong so the KB was not detected I had to revert back to old kernel 2.6.20??, when I booted with old kernel, I found openoffice 2.3 working/opening properly on my system locally. I don;t know what could be issue...I am ready to compile if I knew what to...lol..

Issue still continuing...

I can open office version install on my machine using vncviewer for vncserver running in my account.

BUT locally opened openoffice does not work..

This seems not an issue with openoffice but some profile variables ?

Don't know if this is the same thing but I had the issue of the splash screen (oosplash.bin) hanging and eating up all CPU resources until I killed it off.

I've tried the various things suggested around the place and finally tried rebooting my machine altogether.

And what do you know? It starts up now. So give this a try, it might save you a lot of time.

I'm running OpenOffice 2.3.0 and had the same problem with the bin version.

Hmm, maybe... I'm thinking more along the lines of an X problem, though. Might there be any blatant errors or obstentatious warnings in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?

I've tried the various things suggested around the place and finally tried rebooting my machine altogether.

And what do you know? It starts up now. So give this a try, it might save you a lot of time.

I'm running OpenOffice 2.3.0 and had the same problem with the bin version.

I tried rebooting many a times due different occasions like kernel compiling...but it did not work in this kernel..

now I am decding to boot in old kernel in machine and try it oo-2.3.1
