Well spider and his amazing ebuilding has unmasked the desktop environment Gnome 2, and we are the first distribution to officially have it so how do all you gentoo users feel about that.

Good to hear!
Hopefully we have the whole system working and being smooth and nice, also a big thanks to the testers who've kept telling me when I miss things ;) _________________ For immediate answers, @gentoo.org :

A huge thank you. Not just for your speedy and efficiant work in getting this ready for us, but for sticking with it through all the beta test grumblers!
Emerging now... |

I just tried to emerge gnome2 and portage told me gnome-core is blocked. I am not sure what that means because I know it isn't masked. Do I need to unmerge gnome-core before I can emerge gnome2? |

This is described here : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=6223
"If you have a previous Gnome 1.4 installation, portage will stop and complain that "gnome-core" is blocking, to solve this issue you have to:
emerge unmerge gnome-core
This will remove the conflicts encountered. "

One thing I've noticed.. its probably a temporary thing, but #1 edb isn't building (I have no clue where that dependancy came from.. shrug) and #2 I unmerge gnome-core... and it keeps coming back when I run emerge -up world .... should we be throwing that into packages.mask? rather annoying to have that keep coming up :p _________________ -gj |

It is moments like this that make me realise why I got into bed with Gentoo in the first place. |

Yes yes yes yes yes, it was quick and easy and very impresive. Spider deservers a raise, oh wait does he get paid for this? Anyways thanks so much for not sitting in your computer chair and doing all this and shutting yourself out from the world . Of course now the big question when will Galeon 2 be ready? |

I don't claim any special expertise, so if this is inane, let me know:
Would editing your /var/cache/edb/world file and commenting/removing the gnome-core entry work _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy"

i can't emerge gnome to get gnome-2. Previously, i had gnome-1.4-r3 installed, and i can't do emerge rsync as i am behind firewall, so i downloaded the daily portage tree from the snapshots. and try to unmask those parameters stated by spider, but i couldn't find them in the /usr/portage/profiles/packages.mask
when i go emerge gnome, it always promted gnome-base/gnome-1.4-r3 has been merged......
how can i emerge gnome-2.0 successfully? If i can't, i would like to try to uninstall the current gnome1.4(how do i uninstall packages) and then redo an 'emerge gnome'
any help is appreciated!

I hate to do this since I've been itching to get ahold of Gnome2 for...well, since I installed Gnome 1.4 looooong ago. Anyway, I need to complain a bit about a few things:
1. Launch feedback. In 1.4 on my Redhat box, it's as easy as opening the control panel and turning on application launch feedback. In 2.0, I don't think there even is a control center (running gnomecc opens control center 1.4 which seems stupid to me), and I can't find where to turn the feedback on.
2. Desktop icons. I want to be able to align my icons. Not by name on the left side, I want to be able to put them where ever I want, right click, and click "Tidy Icons" and have them line up nice and pretty.
3. Crashes. Seems like every second time I close Galeon it seg faults. Tried to install a Nautilus theme (which was probably from the old version so it wouldn't work) and it seg faults.
The worst thing is #1 and #2 are listed right on the Gnome2 project page as "must fix" in 2.0 here.
I think that one of the Gnome developers put it best in the bug for issue #2 in the Gnome bugzilla database when he commented:
Quote: | This is the most frequently requested feature for nautilus of which
I'm aware. The lack of a 'snap to grid' feature makes the desktop
extremely hard to organize and/or clean up, and that makes one of the
biggest chunks of functionality much less useful. Or to put it another
way, from the discussion in
http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/1013375702/index_html :
---
ETA for nautilus to ...
by h on Tuesday February 12, @01:26PM
incorporate a 'snap to grid' feature in desktop view:
300 years
incorporate a 'mail file to' feature by right clicking :
1000 years
hey who cares about such shit, if we can browse gopher and listen to
mp3's with our filemanager...
finally i can browse gopher and listen to mp3's !!!!
THANKS NAUTILUS

I tried, still getting gnome-1.4-r3 merged.
I have tried emerge -u gnome, but to no avail. Any idea? |

Did you rsync first? If so, nevermind. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Hopefully still on topic, I read this review of Gnome 2. Being that this site and author are
what turned me on to Gentoo, I think I will avoid Gnome 2 until it has had a chance to ripen. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

That could be true... I haven't emerged it, and won't until at least .01. However, I have read
posts in these forums that conveyed the same issues. The descriptions indicate to me that
I would dislike the same "problem areas". _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

|

Hi
I did emerge Gnome2 but when I run it and try to change the fonts from the Desktop Preferences -> fonts, the fonts in the preview look awfull (not anti-aliased) or for most of them I get small squares...
note: AA in KDE3 looks beautiful!
Any idea why I get that?
Thanks _________________ /Woollhara |
