Finally! Can't wait for the ebuild. Check it out here.
Also, does anyone know what the procedure is gonna be for upgrading from 1.4 to 2? What needs to be removed, what stays, will the ebuild do it for me, etc.? I'm lazy |

this is great news. since i found relief with gentoo, i've been using blackbox as my wm and have been really pleased with it. before gentoo, i used gnome with redhat for a long while so i'm looking forward to giving this new release a try.
congratulations to all that worked on the gnome 2.0 project. anything that is a step closer in bringing linux on the desktop for everyone is something that should be applauded.

I think it depends on the maintainer, but they seem to be fast getting them up. This is pretty big though, so it may be more complicated. Anyone else know for sure? |

From what I've seen so far, Spider is very quick to get new ebuilds out. _________________ Gentoo:

Spider is responsible for gnome, and he is fast so I'm sure you won't have to wait long before gnome2 is unmasked and ready to emerge.
To give you an idea of releases look at:
Code: |
less /usr/portage/gnome-base/gnome/ChangeLog

i hope it will work, i was trying to emerge the rc2 (i didn't know that v2 final was released, otherwhise i would have waited) and i got problems allover.
missing ebuilds on portage (libart_gpl-2.3.9 for instance) are giving me serious headaches...
i hope spider keeps up his fine work and finishes these ebuilds soon, otherwhise i'm stuck to this laptop for a while... |

I'm hoping there will be a way to run 1.4 and 2 on the same machine. I've read some things
about Gnome 2 that suggest I may not like it, though I hope I don't mind the "differences". _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

From the announcement, it sounds like you run 1.4 or 2, not both _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Well, you run 1.4 apps fine (I'm using galeon 1.2.5 now, and gnomeicu) whereas the desktop becomes 2.0 ....
Its kind of difficult to have both versions of the desktop and programs at the same time, dont you agree? ;) _________________ For immediate answers, @gentoo.org :

Well, there were a couple of posts somewhere that made me think I might not like 2. Basically,
"dumbing" down Gnome (my interpretation anyway). I was mainly hoping to be able to switch
back and forth for comparison, and then pick. Oh well. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Wow Gnome 2 is so... unimpressive. I guess I'll move to blackbox until they figure out what there plans are. Right now it feels like they couldn't finish in time so they ripped out 3/4 of the configuration options. Is there any way to revert back to gnome 1.4 easily? |

This is what Spider writes:
Code: |
*gnome-2.0.0 (27 Jun 2002)
27 Jun 2002; Spider <spider@gentoo.org> gnome-2.0.0.ebuild :
A final release. quite big list this time, we'll keep it so for another two weeks and then do a -r1 without debugging.
|
Edit: the ebuild isn't complete yet. Only the deps are listed, no code for compiling and installing is in the ebuild. Let's wait for Spider |

So this is supposed to tell us that the Gentoo Gnome ebuild is now unmasked and is the Gnome2 final? So if I just do "emerge gnome" this will now emerge Gnome2? I think thats what I am supposed to take away from that post. Can you verify Spider? Thanks! (Sorry I'm at work or I'd just try it on my Gentoo box to find out, but I'm so excited I don't wanna wait until later tonight!) I am really suprised if the ebuild is already done, if so you are an animal Spider!!! I hope you can take a day or so off and get some rest!
Thanks to all the Gentoo developers, you guys are heros, and GENTOO ROCKS!!

Yanking out those options was the point. GNOME2 is designed to be extremely clean, fast, lean, reliable, and uncluttered. They succeeded. If you want something with a bazillion options without regards to speed, use KDE (which is what I use
I really like the new GNOME2 look, and after reading the link above I am considering switching to it. It just looks so clean and professional. Of course, I'll probably end up using both. _________________ The greatest deeds are still undone, the greatest songs are still unsung... |
