can anyone please help about setting up an email server.
I can't find any tutorial that can guide me through all the steps in order to make it work.
on gentoo.org is a tutorial but I think it was made to make fun of us.... anyway... I don't want to be rude.

It doesn't matter if the tutorial is for qmail or postfix.

Thank you.

If you're after a simple set-up guide, start by setting up postfix for local email only, here is an old-ish forum based howto on the topic:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=61606

Then you just need to enable postfix to accept email for whatever domain it is you're collecting email for, and open a hole in your firewall that forwards SMTP traffic to your server. Obviously you need to set-up your MX records to allow your email to be delivered to your new server, you can even do this with dyndns or whatever if you don't have a fixed IP.

Here are all the guides that I know of, just strip the info you need, and ignore any mysql/virtual set-up if you're only hosting one email domain:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=61606

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Spam_Filtering_with_Gentoo,_Postfix,_Amavis

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Email:_A_Complete_Virtual_System_-_Postfix

TIP: If you want a spam filter (as most self respecting email servers have and NEED these days) check out Mailscanner, it's a wrapper type daemon that handles spamassasin and virus checking (using whatever open virus scanner you like). It's available in the sunrise overlay.

First of all thank you for your answers and excuse me I didn't answer for such a long period.

I still haven't found the answers I'm looking for. I've tried the links proposed by jcat and by Kensai but they are not what I'm looking
for. Although I've tried them before you told me about them I must thank your for your help. The problem with this howto's is that they are
not very good explained and they seem to be written by someone who didn't know very well what he was doing. They are also outdated.

In my first post I've asked for a good tutorial no matter what kind of email server they explain. Meanwhile, I've decided to install qmail
but without vpopmail, mysql, postgre or any other add-on or utility or whatever. I want just qmail which will be able to send and reveive emails.
That's it. No spam protection, no virus protection, no centralized administration... NO NOTHING. SEND AND RECEIVE.....

I'm trying to install this server using the steps provided by this tutorial:

http://www.gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Setup_QMAIL_RELAY-CTRL_VPOPMAIL_%26_QMAILADMIN_with_a_minimum_amount_of_fuss.

First problem:

after installing RELAY-CTRL and executing this command:

Code:

> tcprules /etc/tcprules.d/tcp.qmail-smtp.cdb /etc/tcprules.d/.tcp.qmail-smtp.tmp < /etc/tcprules.d/tcp.qmail-smtp

I'm getting this error message:

Code:

tcprules: fatal: Unable to find colon on non-empty line.

Can you please help me?

Sorry, but I can't really help with QMail, I use Postfix because it's simple to setup

Hope you get it going anyway.

Cheers,

The error means you have some no-comment line without the : separator. In tcpserver parlance, this char is used to separate the addresses and the actions.

Could you post the content of /etc/tcprules.d/tcp.qmail-smtp?
